Easy for a Neophyte
on April 8, 2016
Posted by: Traum
Relatively easy for a neophyte like myself to complete. All I'd like is an overview at the beginning briefly describing the forms that need to be completed and organized.
What's great about it: Organized
What's not so great: No overview at the beginning.

I have been a TurboTax user (for both personal as well as for my small business and trust returns) for the past couple of decades, and I can honestly say that I have never had one return questioned by the IRS. I have total and complete confidence that what TurboTax tells me is accurate and concise.
What's great about it: Great Accuracy
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Complicated Manufacturing & Retailing Taxes
on May 22, 2016
Posted by: WineGuy47
This is a review of Turbo Tax Business. I have super complicated taxes, however after several accountants in a row did my taxes incorrectly and cost me money, I decided to go it on my own. I have no accounting training and no tax training, so it's a nightmare to figure this stuff out when you have a multi-member manufacturing business that has a long turn around from manufacturing to sale. We are a winery so it's typically 3 years between purchasing the "parts" and selling the product. The COGS calculation in turbo tax do not seem to be able to comprehend this so I have to fudge the numbers to get it to come up with the correct cost of goods sold. Not especially an issue, but many people would just assume it's calculating correctly. Every year there seems to be some sort of bug with the software, the bugs tend to show up when you make a selection then you try to go back and make a new selection, like in asset entry you decide to change from a section 179 to normal depreciation or the like. This latest version worked the best yet, but still had to start over on a couple asset entries to get them to display all the questions over again. The balance sheet and equity never match my books, I have to spend hours finding the differences between book and tax and entering them in through the forms (you cannot do this through the guided portion, you must go through the forms). This year I could not comprehend what had gone wrong, after literally starting over 3 times, I came across an import of member draws (draws that happened several years ago) that had nothing to do with this tax term. It was only accessible in the forms (not in the guided section), and you would only see it if you had happened to look at that page. Had it not been for this erroneous import from Quickbooks that it should not have imported (and did not ask me where it should go), I would have finished in record time. However instead it took me 3 times as long. Since virtually no one else offers a guided tax software that can remotely tackle our complex situation, we will continue to use it. However I hope it keeps improving. They do a bit better each year, but still bugs and situations that it does not do well with. Perhaps someday they will figure out that goods are often purchased prior to the year they are sold and must be accounted for in the COGS calculation... Bottom line, if you have a non-manufacturing business, business with minimal assets, or a service business, this software is awesome, save yourself an accountant, they are not needed. If you have a more complex situation, it will work but can be a real pain. Use the guide, then go through the forms to make sure it's all actually covered.
What's great about it: Don't need to pay an accountant, most things work great
What's not so great: Import from Quickbooks is not the best, Cost of Goods calculations do not work right in multi year manufacturing/sales

Great program. I've been using Turbo Tax since the early 90's, and it is the best program and gets easier each year to use.
Would be nice if you did a "Throwback" pricing thing.
What's great about it: Umm, simple
What's not so great: Wee bit too high of a price, ahem, ahem

More control needed

the quickbooks import would not update change made in quick book to the company account. Finally, after about 4 hours, I figured out how to delete all the Quickbooks data, then re-imported again from scratch, and that worked.
What's great about it: economical, moderate ease to use
What's not so great: Quickbooks import has issues

Not a Typical TurboTax Product
on June 14, 2016

I was disappointed there wasn't a MAC version, but purchased the software anyway. I "thought" I would be able to upload my QuickBooks data, but was surprised (and very aggravated# to learn TurboTax will ONLY upload a QuickBooks file that has been opened on the same computer. Since I have Windows running in Unity on my MAC #VMware Fusion), I expected to be able to meet that requirement. Nope. I had to get a QuickBooks for Windows version and install it as well as the MAC version I already had. Very frustrating that Intuit has not found value in bringing this software up to the same level as all other TurboTax versions. I would never purchase another Intuit product if this were my only experience with TurboTax.
What's great about it: Able to complete my Corporate taxes
What's not so great: No MAC version and would not recognize Quickbooks online version
Pros: I bought or sold investments
