some good, some bad
on March 26, 2016

The manual prep of my LLC forms was daunting. I really wanted to do it myself, since my company is brand new and tiny, with only about SIX transactions. Then I started looking at the forms and was quickly overwhelmed. So I bought the TurboTax Business product. It did simplify the process.
The bad news - when I changed some numbers on the Income section, TurboTax would not update the calculated sums. That certainly decreased my confidence in the accuracy of the computations.
Bad news, part two - when these update/refresh errors occurred, I spend some time entering the particulars in the "Tell Us What You Think" box that is shown at the bottom right side of the TurboTax window. I got the spinning blue wheel #Not Responding# then this error appeared:
"Oops. It looks like the system is unavailable. We value your feedback, so please try again later."
I'm a big believer in second chances, so I moved on with my work, and tried again in 20 minutes - same error. I'm writing this review 5 days later. I just tried the "Tell Us" button again, and got the same error #see attachment 1#. Another confidence decreaser...
A final irritation - I have invested in two large hi-res monitors, but TurboTax insists in putting forms #4562, for example# in a small frame requiring me to roll and scroll. I know I can change text size with the text tool in lower right corner, but the forms are always displayed in a framed window #see attachment 2#.
Isn't there a better way?
What's great about it: TurboTax made the process easier than doing it manually
What's not so great: some calculations would not refresh/update

Turbo Tax Business
on March 27, 2016

I've used Turbo Tax's personal tax products for many years, and enjoy the convenience. It remembers personal and tax information year to year, and it does the tedious math accurately.
This year I decided to purchase the Business version expressly to file 1041 Trust returns for my children's trusts. Previously, I downloaded and filled out the PDF forms for Federal and State.
I purchased both Federal and State versions. I filled in all the same data as went in the PDF forms. The big difference is that the software does the calculations. Next year it will be a bigger time saver because it should have the basic data on file.
The Federal E-File process involves printing, signing, imaging and attaching a signature page. The work is similar to printing, signing and sending the return.
My state does not allow E-Filing, which Turbo Tax helpfully informed me about. However, it completed the E-File process on Federal and then failed to produce the printed materials required to file the state, and failed to produce the normal helpful instructions as to where to send it and what to attach. I consider the expense of the State package not worthwhile because I ended up doing most of the work myself anyway.
Overall, I think this package is marginally valuable for the purposes of tax filing for Trusts.
What's great about it: Does the math
What's not so great: State filing process is a fail

2015 Review Trust Fund Return
on March 30, 2016

If you deal with any type of trust, in this case a testamentary trust, using Turbo Tax Business is a must. Unless you want to hire a CPA. I strongly recommend it for filing trust fund returns.
What's great about it: Easy to use, understand.
What's not so great: A lot of forms to print out and mail.

Use every year. Do not like the lack of real help function, !!! no downloads for financial instit's 1099's, starting to charge extra for everything, electronic filing starting to get costly.
Audit protection great feature, used once and worked great
What's great about it: Highly user friendly, accurate
What's not so great: Poor help,no download for 1099's from financial institutions

Better than paper for trusts
on April 2, 2016

My first year of doing estate taxes was to go to an accountant. For every year thereafter I have used TurboTax Business. It's a lot better and cheaper than going to an accountant. But each year I keep my hopes up that it will be given the import capability I've come to use and love with TurboTax for Home and Business. Maybe someday perhaps.
Also would like to see the ability to link K-1 forms automatically to returns being prepared using TurboxTax for Home and Business for beneficiaries.
But I couldn't believe in the 2015 version they dropped the running total display at the top of the screen to show Federal and State owed/refunded. Don't understand why that was done. Oh well.
Unless I can find a superior replacement I'm sticking with TurboTax Business for trusts. Final word: there are more opportunities to automate and streamline tax preparation for TurboTax to build into it's software.
What's great about it: Handles trust returns and generates beneficiary K-1s
What's not so great: No import of brokerage data (all manual entry); No running tally of amount owed or overpaid - used to be in prior vers

Suprisingly robust, can use a few improvements
on April 3, 2016

In general, TurboTax business was surprisingly good by covering most areas and providing a relative easy and straightforward way to enter all the information. Going through all my business taxes, including foreign partners, and investments, was a matter of about 8 hours, including review.
There are only a couple of areas were the program was not very helpful, which at the end took 80% of those 8 hours to figure out:
-- Some forms for the foreign partners are not handled by TurboTax #e.g., forms 8804 and 8805#. Find this was not too difficult #through Intuit forums and help#, but filling them out is not an easy task without any help from the tool
-- The tool assumes the most common situations, which in some cases makes it impossible to find out where to file things. For example, a form 1099-R type P does not fall in any of their "common cases". This is one example of 5 or 6 I ran into.
-- Lastly, personally I find the help not very useful. Easy things are well explained. Complex things contain enumerations of actions to take, without explaining why they are needed.
This is the first time in five years I do my business taxes myself, so perhaps some of the shortcomings of the tool are actually my limited understanding of tax procedures. Still, for a tool that claims simplicity for "any user", I'd had hoped for clearer explanations.
What's great about it: Comprehensive coverage, easy to go through entire return
What's not so great: Missing Foreign partners paperwork, help usually does not explain the "why"

I love the program itself, but it is very frustrating to have to use two computers! one for business and one for personal.
What's great about it: Great program,i have used it for years.
What's not so great: Needs to be done for Apple!
