OK but NOT GREAT for Trusts
on March 23, 2016

I use this to save money. I used a Trust Tax specialist in the past who made a mistake causing me to deal with the IRS later for something inconsequential. Didn't cost me anything but still a pain in the butt. I've had no problem with the IRS or State of California using Turbo Tax Business in the past 3-4 years. but every year there are strange errors that I cannot fix or remove. Example, I entered "0" for interest Income. But in the final form for California, it showed $6.00 of tax exempt interest income. Where did that come from? There was no way to remove it so I left it in figuring the State of California isn't going to bother with the tax on $6.00.
Also, it did not ask me about Estimated Tax payments at any time. I had to go back in to correct this information when the review showed me owing a lot of money. VERY FRUSTRATING.
What's great about it: A lot cheaper than using a Trust Tax preparer
What's not so great: Strange little errors that you cannot fix

Trust Return
on March 24, 2016

I got conflicting error messages complaining the begin date and end date field on the Fiduciary Worksheet should be blank, when they where blank and then complained that the begin date and end date had an invalid date when it was blank.
I also don't understand why this version of the software cannot download the 1099 information for the broker.
Helpful but I would expect it have all the features the regular Turbo Tax has. It would also be nice to have the ability to file a trust return for the Home and Business software.
Why do you think my nickname is too short. Bob. It is what it is.
Good thing my parents didn't have this problem with my nickname.
What's great about it: Better than it use to be
What's not so great: appears to be buggy.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Excellent but Expensive for Trust Only Taxes
on March 25, 2016

I have to file a 1041 return for a simple trust which only has two rentals. The only TT product that handles 1041s is TT Business. This is expensive and I need only a very small portion of it. I wish TT would include 1041s in a less expensive product, e.g. TT Home and Business.
What's great about it: Easy to use and comprehensive
What's not so great: To file for a simple trust, I have to buy TT Business, most of which I don't need.

Suggestions

I have a Trust and only need to file a 1041, unfortunately, TurboTax only had the Business Software that has this, and it's the most expensive software package. Should include the 1041 in the Deluxe package. Another suggestion is to be able to electronically download your Brokerage information from your financial institution like the other packages so we don't inadvertently miss something. Shouldn't be all that hard to do...
What's great about it: Easy to fill out
What's not so great: Expensive for just needing to file a Form 1041; need to be able to transfer Broker info
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Great discovery of $
on March 27, 2016

The biggest advantage has been that Turbotax experts noted that I was not properly filing as an S Corp. The result was I recovered over $40K in overpaid taxes during the past 3.5 years. I will scream your praises to all my friends. The process of making amended returns was really very easy particularly because you have live people providing advice 24/7.
What's great about it: Turbotax has an excellent staff to support their online service
What's not so great: Sometimes the update process caused me to lose my data.

Turbotax business not as solid as personal
on April 10, 2016

Overall the product performed well but right at the end, when it came to filing, it complained about ownership percentages on my state return (California) which the Federal didn't complain about. It seemed like the information wasn't getting copied over properly to the state return.
Secondly, one of my deductions (assets) had a code generated for it in the Federal worksheet that was somehow invalid in the state return.
To fix both problems I had to switch to the Forms view, then manually edit the worksheets. I had to move my asset deduction to another category to avoid having to regenerate my K-1s with different numbers (I'd already printed them and entered them in my personal taxes).
In TurboTax Deluxe and Premier I never had this problem of having to manually edit forms. Not a showstopper, but takes away from the overall ease of use.
What's great about it: Good step-by-step
What's not so great: Errors in CA State return

great product

This is a great product, though it confuses me (i have 3 college degrees!) with the endless error loop and review on balance sheet. No clue what the heck to do. Otherwise, a solid product that I have used for many years.
What's great about it: straightforward directions
What's not so great: some items that keep me in an error fix loop

Only messed up a little this year
on June 19, 2016

Usually filing through TurboTax Business is 30 minutes of getting things imported and then 5 hours of figuring out what the heck it messed up and how to fix it, then fudging the numbers until it actually lets me file. This time I only had to change one number (still not sure why) and it only took 1.5 hours, total. That's solid improvement.
What's great about it: Was actually kind of fast and not too much of a hassle
What's not so great: Still gets things wrong every time
