Good for 1041 Filer But Missing Essential Elements
on April 4, 2016
Posted by: DCBill2016
As a long-time user of TurboTax Business for Form 1041 filings, I can recommend it for its pluses: you can jump into a return with last year's information, update the details supporting single entries that may have similar information this tax year, and jump to tips and IRS instructions easily, and file on-line (with helpful reviews done). But missing elements haven't been included despite long-standing complaints from the community: brokers' 1099-DIV, -INT, and -OID forms must be done by hand (unlike what exists for TurboTax's 1040 software, an enormous time waster. There's no 1099-OID form in the software, so you have to figure it out each year; and the calculator won't pop-up when a box is open, when you need it most.
What's great about it: Ability to keep detailed information on entries that summarize multiple inputs; ability to start with last year's data
What's not so great: No download of 1099's from brokers; no 1099-OID form; Calculator not available when needed
Pros: I bought or sold investments

As a novice I found out late in preparation season that even though I purchased Turbo Tax Home and Business and even though the CD cover indicated it would do taxes for Estates and Trusts, I also had to buy Turbo Tax Business to complete filing of an Trust. Not clear at all for Novices at Tax preparation
What's great about it: Continued prompts for novices at tax preparation
What's not so great: Lack of clear details

I really wanted to give 2 1/2 stars. The flow is smooth but when it came to e-filing it only allows you to file federal and not state. I am unable to see what federal forms were e-filed. Too pricey!
What's great about it: seems easy at first
What's not so great: does not show if forms were filed correctly, over priced

I have been using TT for no less than 10 years. I still find it easy and efficient to use. Keeping good records is essential regardless of how good the program is. I've learned that for sure over the years.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Does not automatically transfer to personal taxes
