TurboTax Business - Poor Guidance for Estate Taxes
on March 27, 2016
Posted by: Braster
I used TurboTax Business this year to file an Estate's taxes. First time doing so - was hopeful that TurboTax Business would guide through the estate tax process, but boy I was very disappointed. I have been a TurboTax Deluxe user for many years for my own personal taxes, but TurboTax Business failed to explain key elements of the estate tax requirements for Form 1041. I ended up going offline and researching most of the tax topics on my own just so that I knew how to fill out the forms correctly - TurboTax was not very helpful - so disappointed. I found TurboTax to be very poor in offering guidance or input on things like Distributions of Property In-Kind, estate charitable donations, Schedule B components of Tier I or Tier II distributions, Form 1041-A requirements, and Section 643(e)(3) elections.
What's not so great: Poor Guidance

TurboTax Business was a waste of money for me
on February 13, 2016

I run a small business using quickbooks online on my mac. I had to dig my OLD windows PC out of the closet because turbotax business is windows only. I also had to do all of the data entry manually because turbotax business is also not compatible with quickbooks online. Overall, this was a big disappointment, and because of the amount of manual data entry required I feel it was a waste of money. I probably wont be back next year for my business taxes, unless compatibility is improved.
What's great about it: easy to use, works just like all other TurboTax products
What's not so great: doesn't work on a mac, doesn't import data from quickbooks online

Good product. Have been using TurboTax both business and personal for years. Will continue doing so. Even turned my lawyer on to it. He was amazed!
What's great about it: Transfer from Quickbooks made this very quick and easy.
What's not so great: Some navigation difficulty, but worked it out.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

It would be nice if the Turbo Tax Business for Corporations, Partnerships, LLCs, Estates & Trusts was offered for the Mac/Apple operating systems rather than just windows.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Program not compatible with Mac/Apple operating

TurboTax Home & Business

I have used TurboTax since it was introduced some 30+ years ago & it has progressively improved & gotten more sophisticated, successfully leveraging PC technology & operating systems over the years. About 20 years ago, I acquired property and equipment requiring a tax software that could handle the complexities of depreciation & amortization & TurboTax fit the bill plus once loaded, it seamlessly tracks and transfers this type of data from year to year. However, I have noticed some degradation in consistency and accuracy and some loss of tried & true functionality that defies logic from a user's perspective. I have consistently rated TurboTax 5 stars over the years but find that I strained to even give it 3 stars this time. One of the most glaring examples is document backup details when entering information on the Schedule E worksheets using the EasyGuide method. I tend to use the tutorial to be safe, so as not to miss entering important information since I only do this once a year. If you select "I'll choose what to work on" the classic fill-in blocks allowed right clicking to "add supporting details", thus permitting entering complete backup data to document a particular cell; however, when using the EasyGuide method the "add supporting details" functionality is turned off. Moreover, once you enter data for a given cell using the EasyGuide, the cell data is locked and not accessible using the "I'll choose what to work on" data entry method if, for example, you later with to go back and "touch up" an individual data entry. The "add supporting details" function ought to be available regardless of the data entry method chosen and it ought to be seamless. Finally, I have noted an increase in outright errors generated by answering various interview questions & transferring data from Federal to State modules leaves a lot to be desired & results in outright errors or omissions, particularly with the PA state program. TurboTax needs to get back to basics that made it the great program it once was that kept me as a long-time customer. I actually wonder if TTAX software engineers & functional reps actually ever test their product. There needs to be a more robust effort to get input from the field & act on it. I would be happy to spend some time with TurboTax to demonstrate glitches that need fixed.
What's great about it: Comprehensive & detailed to handle complex tax situations
What's not so great: Some interfaces & functionality leave a lot to be desired

While I love this software and have been using it for years, the K-1 completion isn't clear enough.
What's great about it: Imports QuickBooks files, is idiot-proof
What's not so great: K-1 process isn't easy

Feel Good!

I was afraid to prepare my tax returns myself after years of having them prepared by an attorney or a CPA (having an S Corp and rental properties the taxes were not simple). However, when I got tired of paying the fees charged for preparation I tried Turbo Tax. The first year took me hours and hours to prepare - and lots of angst. The second year was much better, and the third year even better, and this year the best.
What's great about it: Now that I understand how TurboTax works from yeat to year, preparation was simple (so long as you keep good records).
What's not so great: I had trouble getting the downloads and making payment this year. However, your service representatives were very helpf
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
