After 15 years, giving up on TurboTax Business
on April 18, 2016

I've used TurboTax business for 15 years. I think it hit its peak about 5 years ago, when there was detailed and transparent mapping during import from QuickBooks Pro. Now once the import is done, I can't tell where the data went to verify everything was captured. Then I spend about 4 hours tracking down where Section 179 expense, officer medical, officer insurance etc went. Further, the import inexplicably ignores some mappings (e.g., Shareholder Disability Insurance, Employee Disability Insurance) and asks me to categorize them, WITHOUT even providing the account name so I know what account it is asking about. Since I can no longer rely on import, TurboTax no longer has any significant advantage for me, and the bugs in Section 179 reporting and opaqueness of M-1/M-2 reconciliation are beyond frustrating, so I'm going to try a different tax program next year.
What's great about it: Familiar user interface
What's not so great: Import hides my data. M-1/M-2 reconciliation too hard.

I'm very glad something like turbo tax exists. for someone who really likes to understand how things work, turbo tax explains the effects on my taxes the way no accountant will take the time to - unless I pay them thousands of dollars and then some. the different accountants I either did not take time to explain how I can save on taxes, or were afraid they would be held liable in one way or another, or I couldn't pay them enough. In fact, my tax situation is complicated, with W-2 income as well as LLC, corporation, self-employed business, so there are few accountants out there who was capable of this much information. TurboTax does the job amazingly well. Ultimately, I am responsible for my tax returns, no matter which professional submitted them, so I might as well submit them myself and learn as much as I can what was involved.
What's great about it: easy to use. lots of explanation. can see how different items affect my return
What's not so great: occasional bug on LLC return, complicated 1031 exchange
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

I'm a first time business owner, so filing my taxes was daunting and stressful. TurboTax made it super easy for me to accurately and easily get right with Uncle Sam. There is no way that I would have been able to do this without TurboTax!
What's great about it: The prompts were easy to follow!
What's not so great: I waited till the last minute
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Great software BUT....

BIGGEST complaint is, it doesn't run natively on Mac OS. So once a year, I need to boot Parallels to do my taxes. This workflow becomes a security issue because us Mac users who don't use Windows, don't necessarily keep in the loop about PC malware, viruses, Trojan, etc. Opening an operating system once a year also opens up a can of worms to potentially unsafe net.
With taxes and other sensitive material on my PC Boot, I get worried about my information.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Mac OS not supported

If you're like me and have a small/medium complexity business, there aren't a lot of choices out there. TurboTax Business isn't quite as simple or thorough as the personal products, but it's one of the only ways to avoid hiring an accountant to do your small business taxes.
That aside, I really, really wish my friends at Intuit would either put this product on the Web or port it to Mac OS X. Of the four hours it took me to prepare my tax return this year, about a third was involved in getting the TurboTax Business product running on my Windows 7 virtual machine under VMware Fusion. Indeed, this is about the only thing I require Windows for - and every year, I dread installing the new version (but not as much as I dread visiting the accountant).
What's great about it: Didn't have to speak with an accountant
What's not so great: TurboTax Business is only for Windows
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
