Great Trust Return Help
on April 17, 2016
Posted by: NeededHelp2015
I spent hours and hours trying researching the web and the IRS site to figure out where to put certain items from a 1099 onto the Form 1041. I was on the verge of panicking. I finally succumbed to the allure of TurboTax, having used the Premier edition to file our personal taxes. TurboTax small business helped me complete the return in under an hour and file with confidence that it was right. Thanks! My one complaint was that TurboTax asked me for explanation of a calculation that Turbotax performed (Line 3b Column A on Form 1116), and it happened to be the exact reason that I bought TurboTax in the first place. I ended up including in the explanation that "TurboTax calculated the amount...based on [a certain line] from the 1041".
What's great about it: Reduced time to file a complicated Trust return by hours
What's not so great: TurboTax asked for explanation on one form for a TurboTax calculation

What's great about it: Easy to follow - leads you through all of the details
What's not so great: Does not intuitively let you know which tax schedule/form you are providing the information for
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Better than the other Tax software Apps I've Used
on April 17, 2016

An undo feature would help when completing the forms. Some areas are not explained well - Ex: What code section to use on the Form 4562 line 42 for refinanced loan property (I have to admit that the IRS doesn't provide help, either}. Some explanations were for other versions of TT software,
It would be good if you could review your form before it is submitted to the IRS, not after.
It was still much better than other tax software applications but too expensive. I need it only for the 1065 Form for a small business #2 persons with a few joint rental properties).
What's great about it: You can easily view the tax form
What's not so great: Hard to get explanations to tax questions in some areas. Too expensive.

good but not great

My second year using TurboTax to do business taxes. Program is good at supplying structure so you know what to include/exclude. However, import from QuickBooks never works right and I end up having to manually finding and feeding info over. QB import always bring over crazy values I can't adjust. I tried working on two files, one with import, one without. Import version leaves me with entries I can't explain or manipulate. I suspect TT is not correctly "reading" where entries are and their purpose. Needs a stronger "bonding" function where I can walk TT through what is what in QB for the import to work. For instance, I should be able to take an entry for AUTO insurance and point to it being AUTO insurance, but TT only puts it in "INSURANCE" and does not offer auto, only "health", or "property", so I have to back out of the whole thing and enter manually where I need it. Overall, it sure beats going it alone but I really had hopes on year two it would be more autopilot.
What's great about it: organizes process of getting through business taxes
What's not so great: Quickbooks import never usable. Should link better to understanding some sections.

Trust Return Needs Improvement
on April 17, 2016

I expected more "step-by-step" assistance similar to what is provided with the individual tax return product. I had to do a lot of ancillary research to figure out answers to questions using google. In my opinion, much room for improvement with TurboTax Business.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Use Turbo Tax! It works really well! I was not frustrated at any time that I can remember while doing SIX returns--Federal and State for Partnership, Trust, and Form 1040. The information flows from one return to the same return the next year making it all the easier to use Turbo Tax! Read carefully though, lest you misunderstand the CLEAR instructions by reading TOO HASTILY.
What's great about it: Easy to understand and follow instructions
What's not so great: Found it a bit difficult to launch the Trust return using Business 2015 as it kept wanting to launch Partnership Return
