We bought the Roku so I could avoid running network wires to the television through the floor (it hasn't been supported for at least 6 years and I'm not in the market to buy a new one anyway!) and the temporary solution that we'd been using (streaming Netflix through the Wii) left a bit to be desired in terms of usability and quality. Now, we can stream in HD, it looks much better than using the TV's native app or the Wii, and the user interface is FAR superior. And unlike the Chrome Stick, it supports all of the channels we want to use (mainly Netflix and Amazon, though we have been finding a few others that are great as well.)
I bought this for my living room because I didn't want any more wires hanging from my TV. It is very compact, and runs off of USB power just fine. However, it's slower than a normal Roku. The remote lacks a headphone jack. Most of the apps (Neflix, Hulu, etc..) are modified versions of the apps I'm used to on a normal Roku box and not as easy to use. It's not as nice as a normal Roku to use. But once you've got your show playing, it does a fine enough job. Haven't had any problems with picture quality.
I bought my ROKU stick about a month ago, yesterday when I unplugged it one of the prongs fell out of the plug. I am going to return it today to see if I can get it exchanged for another.
