Trying to "cut the cord".

In the process of attempting to cut the cord and drop our very expensive satellite TV service, I finally convinced my wife to take the leap.
To this end, we set up an indoor HDTV antenna (still tryimg to find a good solution for this, so far only mediocre results) and I purchased a Roku Streaming Stick. I've never been much of a TV watcher myself but my wife is an avid fan of many programs that were actually available on the broadcast networks over the air for free.
After purchasing and successfully setting up the Roku device and linking it to my in-house Wi-Fi network, we were good to go and I was pretty happy with the results. For my wife, not so much. She really wasn't interested in the added available content, just the antenna-based broadcast stuff. The added stuff was for me.
After running the Roku Stick for about a week, here are my impressions;
Good Points:
1. I love the additional content, especially since I found the source for "private channels" for stuff that was not available in the Roku store.
2. Set up was easy and hassle free. Pretty much everything I tried displays very well.
Weak Points:
1. The user interface leaves a lot to be desired. Navigation via the included remote is cumbersome at times.
2. Search? Forget about it! For searching, the user interface totally falls on its face. Using the remote to hunt and peck up and down and alphabet line is totally not acceptable. Each entry of a letter takes two clicks. It takes so long to search for something that I often find myself just giving up and moving on to something else.
3. Breaking news! I found that there are things available, such as on Hulu.com that are NOT available within the Hulu Roku channel. I understand that this is a licensing issue for Hulu and not a Roku problem but that would easily be solved by implementing something like Miracast that would allow me to "tab cast" something from my laptop to the Roku player much like the Chromecast device does.
Come On Roku, get in the game and kick your UI team in the butt. Develop a better interface for search and maybe even consider adding "voice search" such as a new Amazon Fire TV offers.
I just bought the new Roku stick and plugged it in to the HDMI input of my TV. Installation was simple and device gives me access to a wide variety of channels. I like the Roku app for mobile which lets you search any actor or movie or show by speaking into the microphone. No more slow typing on a clumsy keyboard for searches!
Easy to setup, use, and enjoy. Got mine on my AVR to get the DD and DD+ 5.1 audio. (Once connected I set the Roku audio to surround and the display to 1080p) Closed Caption options are really appreciated, sorely missed on other streaming devices. DLNA is a snap with Roku Media Player. Roku Mobile app can cast Music/Photos. Twonky channel combined with Twonky Beam app take care of casting videos and You Tube from mobile- really slick. The Roku android app to go with this is really cool to use as keyboard for text but the best part is the search on mobile. Tap the search icon, tap the microphone and say for example "Gary Busey" and all available content, on any channel, is listed on the app. Select the desired show and it sets the Roku to the entry, ready to start! Sublime. I seems this Mobile Search is a Streaming Stick exclusive for now.
We're so happy with our Roku that we bought a second one immediately for the bedroom so we wouldn't have to keep pulling it out and plugging it in. Customer support was awesome as well when we needed a little help.
This is my first purchase of this technology. I was looking at Apple YV and Chromecast and Roku. Based on the functionality and the reviews I finally went with the new Roku Streaming Stick Hdmi. All I can say is wow! I love it. It was extremely easy to setup. I plugged it into my home theater receiver instead of the tv. I am so happy with it I ordered a second one for the bedroom tv. The price of 2 of these is the same price as 1 Apple Tv or 1 Roku 3. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Thanks Roku for a great product!!!
This product is very nice and I loved the fact it was small and out of the way. It works flawlessly. Some folks say it is slow and loads Netflix slow but I had no problem with it. I had no problem with any other channels either. The only problem I have is that it is too wide to fit next to anything else plugged into HDMI. It really needs a HDMI extension dongle. Other than that I have no issues. Highly recommend this product.
