I have both the streaming stick and a Roku HD, and I do enjoy these devices even though I mostly use them for Netflix only. The nice things about the stick are you can't see it if your HDMI ports are in the back, and because it doesn't use IR you don't have to point the remote at the TV! One little downside, and the only reason I didn't go 5 stars, is I've noticed that periodically the sound will drop off for 10-15 seconds while the video continues. Seems to happen more often on movie-length than sitcom-length shows. So I often find myself with a finger on the 30-second rewind button in case it happens. Not something observed with the HD, but then again that's on another TV in a different room so difficult to pinpoint the cause. Still, just a minor annoyance.
I purchased this to replace a older model HD 720 in a room upstairs from my wi-fi router. While I never had any streaming problems with the older model, the stick had all kinds of problems. Even after setting it to output only 720 it still had problems. I eventually put the HD 720 back upstairs and now use the stick in a room downstairs next to the wi-fi router. It doesn't have any streaming problems there, but it is also limited (by the tv in that room) to 720.
This devise was the best, but after about 6 weeks, the dang thing stopped working. I would have recommended it but if it only lasts 6 weeks there is no point.
Unless you surf the web before you buy, you might not be aware that you CANNOT watch HBO GO on the Roku if you have Comcast. Sure, this is Comcast's fault, not Roku, but Roku knows this and should be giving you some kind of warning on the packaging before you buy (or work something out with Comcast, for crying out loud.) I bought one specifically for HBO GO, and it went right back to the store (but only after a three hour investigation into why it didn't work.)
I'd had a Roku 2XS for several months before deciding I needed another for a second TV. The Stick was an easy choice—takes up virtually no space, and powered by the TV's USB port.
90% of the time we are running Plex on Roku, so we no longer watch cable. We're still waiting for providers to offer decent cable-free streaming subscriptions (I'm talking to you MLB, HBO, etc.), but a little creativity and research will have you watching your favorite TV via Roku in no time.
The only cons I have for the Roku so far are: 1. It seems you cannot turn off the advertisements that appear on the Channels screen. I'd pay a few extra bucks for an update that allowed the disabling of this. 2. Specific to the Stick, bootup is a bit slow. This only matters because on the TV we use it on the USB port turns off with the TV.
