We rarely watch regular tv any more. We love the roku and the fact we can watch what we want when we want. Many option with no commercials too. I would like to see the fastforward/pause functions operate a little more smoothly.
I purchased this Roku some months ago and have taken to task learning how to incorporate its features into my flow & go lifestyle. I prefer to have TV accessible for the enhancement of my life, not the main event; so whereas I'm glad I'd purchased the Streaming Stick, I'm still toiling with sub-navigating channels on a delay and avoiding frivolous registrations / subscriptions. It's a project
TLDR version: Really good device for making a "dumb" TV into a smart TV. Useful for getting Netflix, HBOGo, and other apps onto a TV cheaply. Make sure your internet is strong enough to stream video.
Fits nicely behind the TV. Keep the twist tie around the USB power cable and everything should be nicely tucked behind the screen. The remote isn't complicated but there may be some symboled buttons that some users may not be familiar with. The stick comes on with the TV so no need to turn on the device itself. The initial setup and any future modification will require a second device capable of accessing the internet to set up an account. Afterwards the UI, user interface, is clean and easy to use. There is a great selection of apps, but be warned as some apps / TV stations require a cable subscription or its own recurring fee in order for continued use. You can browse through Roku's website for more details on each specific app and its included fees or restrictions. Thank you to the employee in charge of managing that database. The quality and stability of your viewing experience will be highly dependent on your home internet connection and home network connectivity. For 720p (good looking) content an internet download connection of 5 megabits per second I would recommend. For 1080p (great looking) I would recommend 10 megabits per second download speed. You can locate this information by visiting sites like speedtest. A good wireless router is also nice to have. I'm pretty sure a wireless g router will be fine, wireless n or ac will easily be enough. As for the hardware of the Roku streaming stick itself it is powerful enough to handle most of the apps. There is noticeable lag when scrolling through the Netflix catalog. I'm assuming the next revision will get a small hardware boost due to Moore's Law and will work out the slowness when scrolling through Netflix's mostly picture based catalog. Overall the Roku Streaming Stick is very usable as is and shows promise of being perfect with a bit more work. Adopters picking it up now definitely will be happy with it. I would love to see future improvements be the need for a second device gone during setup and just the slightest of beefier processors.
Cheap. Compact. Easy to use. Absolutely amazing! Loads of content and a simple interface! the Roku Streaming stick really opens up loads of entertainment options!
I bought this a couple months ago and have been unable to use it successfully. There are no guidelines on the Roku stick or website that explain the internet speed needed to run this, so I'm still in the dark. I have high speed DSL and I believe this stick requires higher speed than I have, it demands higher speed than a standard streaming box. I'm not sure why.
absolutely blows Apple TV out of the water. Complete control of Netflix and Hulu. Love it so much I am now going to buy the top of the line box. Only things I would improve: illuminated remote, and a USB stand. I want to see it, not hide it!
