I love the Roku players and have been using them since my wife bought me a first generation player in 2008. Over the years I've upgraded a few times and have been generally pleased with new features available on newer models. The Roku Stick is a bit of a step back from the Roku 3 that we use in another room on our home. The power cable is far too short for our TV that hangs on the wall. Thankfully the USB power option is available, however this means that our power to the Roku Stick is cut every time we turn our TV off. This results in a full boot up of the Roku Stick every time we turn on the TV. The direct HDMI connection is good, but the Roku Stick is too wide to fit comfortably next to adjacent HDMI connections of which we have only one other which connects our DVR box to the TV. This has led to a precarious connection that works but would be more ideal if the Roku Stick were longer and skinnier. The remote is extremely unresponsive and acts as if it goes to sleep within seconds after we use it. This often leads to being unable to stop rewinding/fast-fowarding at the exact time that we want to. The Roku Stick is generally good but if I were to do it over again, I would just buy another Roku 3 instead.
Used for a month. Several times during streaming the video quit. My smart TV did not. I have a good high speed connection and this item is not reliable. The first one I bought didn't work at all.
Initially as good as the Roku 3 in functionality, but after several months, became very, very slow to wake from inactivity. Once awakened, functioned well. I hope there is some update to improve the wait time to use the streaming service.
We were tired of paying the cable company lots of money every month. We took stock in what we watched and didn't, and came to the conclusion that cable was a waste for us. We stream a lot on Netflix, and this seemed to be a no-brainer. We also purchased an HD antenna to pick up local stations. Overall, we are happy with the Roku, although it is not a perfect choice. Outside of ubiquitous services such as Amazon, Netflix, Hulu, and Voodoo, there are many niche channels. We have had occasional issues with Netflix on the Roku. We have had to reset the unit twice to keep Netflix playing on the Roku. The stick takes up little space (slightly larger than a standard old-style USB drive). The remote is simple to use and is flawless. Mostly, the interface is seamless.
This solution has worked well for me. TV is not a major part of my life. I'm ok with waiting to see the latest episodes of a series. I like movies, and there are lot to choose from. Since I have a Netflix DVD plan, I can watch many more movies that are not available for free streaming.
If you are someone that needs a wide variety of very good sports coverage, or absolutely need to see the latest Cable episodes, then this is not for you. If you con't care about these things and want to save A LOT of money, then the Roku streaming stick might be a good choice for you. It was for us.
I currently have Chromecast, Apple TV, and Roku 2 XD. The Roku HDMI Stick is by far the best of the bunch. It is compact (hides behind your tv depending on your HDMI plugs), the remote has excellent reach without requiring line-of-sight, wireless network connection is excellent and never drops with great HD picture. The Roku HDMI Sick does require USB power (plug included) but luckily my tv has USB plugs that can power the Roku so no need to take up an extra electrical plug. Some apps/channels do take some time to load (ie. Netflix) but once they do the picture and sound are great. I also use it a lot to watch the WWE Network. Overall: Fantastic product.
