I cut cable about a year ago and had been using my laptop to stream my favorite TV shows. A little over a month ago, I began working on a Master's degree and needed my laptop to complete assignments, etc. So rather than buying a smart tv, I decided to get the Roku Stick. Because I have no intention of play games, I decided the stick would serve it's purpose and it was less expensive than the Roku3. While I have to pay for Hulu Plus and Amazon Prime subscriptions, it beats paying Time Warner hundreds of $'s a year.
What I do not like about Roku or any other streaming player is the lack of being able to use a cordless keyboard or some other device that would make it easier to search, signup for subscriptions, sign-in, etc. Having a small remote control where you have to use the Up and Down buttons to select each letter is archaic in today's technology. Because it is so "old school", I cannot help but think that there is some regulation by the FCC or agreements with the cable or computer companies. So in an effort to stop the mass exodus from cable or prevent people from using the TV to access everything on the WWW, you have to make it difficult to access? Just do it!! The networks no longer want to deal with the cable companies and people do not need to buy laptops to surf the web and watch FREE shows on network websites!! Honestly, I do not mind there being commercials as long as I do not have the huge cable bill or other big subscription fee!! Having a remote that works like Atari -- except no joystick -- is very frustrating. Again, I can't help but wonder what prevents you from allowing cordless keyboards. Something seems fishy!!
I cut my cable when they wouldn't suspend service while I was away for an extended period. After getting my Roku, I don't miss cable bills one bit. I have more options at a fraction of what I was paying with cable. I plan an getting some for Christmas gifts.
I bought a TV with a Roku stick recently, but soon found out that the stick is only compatible with MHL ports. I thought when I was buying it that was purely HDMI but it appears it isn't. It took a fair amount of research to find out that that was why it wasn't working with our other TV which is the same make but a different size and apparently without a HDMI/MHL port.
I bought this new Roku a few months ago because I noticed that it had a few new features than my older model. I'm happy I upgraded because this one is much quicker. Hulu used to take forever to load. Now it only takes a couple of sections. I also like that since it's an HDMI stick it is hidden behind my tv!
Roku is outstanding in its features. As a senior citizen, they have made it easy to use and navigate for me. I am enjoying movies and TV series at a "touch" of a button.
IAnaI love the Roku. I think I am going to cancel my cable because the Roku offers enough channel through Amazon Prime and Roku to watch any movie I like.
