I bought this Christmas, its terrible, no good movies......CAN'T GET FOX BUSINESS...LIKE ADVERTISED?.. I would not get this again and would not recommend ..........OLD MOVIES........NO GOOD MOVIES...I HATE IT
I picked up the Roku Streaming Stick to add as a second streaming device for my home entertainment system. I already have an Apple TV, and am very happy with it. However, there are certain streaming services, such as Pandora and Amazon Instant Video, that will NEVER be added to the Apple TV. The Roku Streaming Stick provides a convenient way to access this content without having to add to the pile of boxes underneath my TV. As long as you have an open HDMI port on your TV or AV receiver, you're good to go.
While the stick is much smaller than a set top box, plugging it into your HDMI ports may be a problem due to the size of the stick and the short length of the HDMI plug. This was the case for me, as the adjacent HDMI port already had another device plugged in. Luckily, Roku will provide you with a free HDMI extender cable that will alleviate this problem. Simply register your Streaming Stick and order the extender cable from the Roku website. I received mine in just a few days, and it worked perfectly.
The Roku Streaming Stick utilizes an RF remote control, which is essential as the stick will probably end up sitting behind either your TV or AV receiver. I noticed that I still had to point the remote in the general direction of my TV for it to work, but it is definitely much more flexible than the older-style IR remotes. Unlike the Apple TV, the remote for the Streaming Stick has quite a few more buttons and is large enough that you won't be constantly losing it due to its size. At the same time, Roku's remote seems slower and less responsive than the tiny remote for the Apple TV. In particular, having the 'OK' button below and separate from the directional arrows really slows things down, especially when trying to type out search queries or enter passwords.
Besides the included remote, there is also a free smartphone app available that will allow you to operate the Streaming Stick from your phone. This is a convenient option, and makes typing on the screen much, much faster. It's also handy if your remote has a habit of disappearing underneath furniture or between the cushions of your couch.
All of the content available on the Roku set top boxes is also available on the Streaming Stick. The variety of channels and services available is much wider than what's currently available on the Apple TV. However, the quality of the programming available on some of the Roku channels leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully, this will improve over time. Unlike the Apple TV, the Roku only displays channels that you have selected and added to your Roku account. While most channels are free, there are some that you have to buy, including several games. If you're looking to cut the cord and get rid of your cable or satellite TV service, you may be a bit disappointed. Many of the Roku channels that are also available on cable require you to log in through your cable or satellite provider. For example, you'll need an HBO subscription in order to use HBO Go. Fortunately, HBO Go is going to be available via an independent, streaming-only subscription later this year. For now, though, the Roku Streaming Stick probably won't replace your cable or satellite TV service.
Overall, the Roku Streaming Stick is a solid product, and I'd recommend it despite its somewhat slow and clunky interface. Hopefully, later versions of the device will improve the layout of the remote control and speed things up a bit.
Works when it wants to. I have tried on all 4 of my tvs. Replaced batteries in remote & reset both remote and stick. Noth helps. Should have bought another roku2
PROS: Little, easy to set up, has almost all the channels you could want, runs 1080p Cons: very very slow UI I dont know if this is from internet connection or bad software, kinda wide and hard to plug into a tv with other HDMI devices plugged in.
