I repell technology. It hates me. I got the ROKU streaming stick for Christmas. I had to ask what it was,and did. My daughter assured me I could figure out how to use it. I had my doubts... It was so easy to install and set up! I didn't even have to ask for help, and that says A Lot! I currently have cable and every channel there is. I did not have a way to access Netflix or other steaming sites, like Amazon therefore I coul watch shows that only they provided, like Orange is the new Black. ( which I watched both seasons in two days and can't wait for the third one I was surprised to see all the other channels available. I'm locked into my cable contract until July, but now with this wonderful ROKU I can finally get rid of cable and all the problems that come with it, not to mention the bill....! I told my daughter, who gave me the ROKU " this is the best present I've ever gotten! and it is! I love this thing!
We cut the cable cord a few months ago and now use just an antenna,, Netflix, and Hulu Plus. The Roku was a great addition, allowing us access to these sites on our second TV, which is not a Smart TV. In fact, I am happier with the Roku than our Samsung Smart TV!
I've had the streaming stick for about 4 months. I had a terrible time getting connection. It burned out in that time and almost killed my tv. It is now sitting in a drawer. It was nice while it lasted, but kind of a waste of money and hours of aggravation of waiting for good connection.
Finding what I want to watch is laborious to say the least. The point and 'OK' set-up is a pain when you want to find something that has more than two letters or numbers in its title. Little if anything is free. All the channels need a subscription. So, if you've paid for a subscription then you can access that channel. Also, movies are less expensive on my cable provider and I did not need to spend an extra $40 to watch them.
I have 2 Roku's on TV's that aren't hooked up to Directv. It's so nice to have access to shows & movies without antenna, cable or satellite! Great device!
I have the Roku 3 and a Roku streaming stick. Bot are excellent/outstanding products with one minor flaw that is totally frustrating. They freeze up and the functionality is null and void. You can't use the product for its intended purpose. The freezing up has happen during watching programs or while trying to watch select a program. The remote doesn't function denying access to the menu making one unable to select a program. It has happened more frequently with the Roku 3 than the steaming stick. However, it occurs frequently enough in both models to frustrate even the most savvy tech oriented person.
The product's potential, however, is unlimited and I would recommend it even with this occasional limitation. Especially if you have a "dumb TV" that has at least two HDMI ports. When it works, which it does 90% of the time, it makes these TV's on par with the high end smart TV's for fraction of the cost. As an owner of a Sony XBR 900c 4K 65 inch TV, among others. The streaming stick makes the TV even smarter and gives a unlimited variety of internet options to explore and enjoy.
