I got the stick as a XMAS gift and it was defective. I took it back to Best Buy and they exchanged it for me. Hook-up was simple. I followed the directions and initially plugged the stick into my TV and realized I now had to run cables for the audio from my TV to my AVR. I should have known that I could simply plug the stick directly to my AVR. I suggest the "getting started" instructions state that the stick can also be plugged into a AVR. I love this stick and the streaming is flawless. I wish the remote had a backlight. I hope the novelty wears off soon as all I do is watch TV. I need to get back to my normal life.
Good initial design for product. Buffering-delays are a continual problem however. The "jump-back" function frequently takes longer to buffer and replay: than the few seconds of content-replay itself. Needs improvement in "jump-forward", "jump-backward", "fast-forward", "rewind", functions. No ability to move frame-by-frame. Needs to match these capabilities, to at least the level found with current, standard, DVR's, as they are used by cable & satellite vendors. Needs to improve performance when moving between selected page-levels. One ought to be able to reliably navigate, from a content-selection, back to the menu level. Often times: one finds themselves thrown all the way back to the start menu and is then required to re-select a channel, then re-select a category, then re-select a content-option, and so forth: many levels simply to return to where you wished to go in the first place.
Out of the box this works like a charm. Have not logged a lot of hours with this but a sign of ease of use is that every time I come back to use it, I get where I want to go in no time at all. As an HDMI device, we ran out of ports since we use our sound system as a switching device for our TV. Plugging the Roku into a port switching device was instantly compatible and dutifully switched the multiport auto switch that the Roku shares with our Blueray. Great to have things work the way they should and everyone plays nice. Not wild about yet another remote handset - like I need one more for my drawer full of devices. Wish these guys would all get together and stop the remote proliferation. But back to the Roku - wonderful little gem.
We got to enjoy it for 1 month and then the resets began. We lost sound to Netflix first Then we were having to reset, unplug, plug in, Then all sound became distorted and it was so hot we had to disconnect it. It was done. We were done. Took it back and got a refund.
I got the Roku Streaming Stick and absolutely LOVE it. It's so easy to use! Just had to plug it into my HDMI port, follow the set up instructions, and it was good to go! I love that I can watch Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Instant Video, and so much more all in one place!
