I bought the Roku Stick a month or so ago and so far, it's been very good. I previously used a Chromecast, and the Roku's performance is distinctly better. Simple tasks like pausing and rewinding are much more reliable and speedy on the Roku, plus I don't need another device (like a phone or computer) to stream the media. The Roku also has way more media available, which is good and bad. It's good because there are many channels on which to locate the media you might want to see (ranging from well-known like Netflix and Amazon to not-so-well-known). The bad is that there are so many channels to wade through it's difficult to determine what's useful and what's not. We're hoping as we become more familiar with the Roku channels, we might be able to ditch cable TV.
I took my family to our vacation house and instead of pulling out old VHS tapes and DVDs I just plugged in the stick and my kids asked why we never had the Roku stick before now!
I have a medium speed broadband package and my roommate was running a competitor's stick with her tablet while I was running lappy. With 2 phones and another tablet she got lagged out. I switched my lappy to ethernet and got a Roku stick for the living room. I did a lot of research before buying and set up was easier than I thought it would be. At the store, the sales people hissed at me because I was not buying the most advertised popular thing but I knew exactly what I wanted and what I was getting. It works perfectly and have not had any problems.
I was originally excited at getting a more compact version of my Roku II. I had assumed that it would have been powered by the USB outlet to which it was plugged into, but upon opening the package, I found that it still had a separate power supply..Disappointment #1
I plugged it in and was immediately underwhelmed by the lag in response occurring between the use of the remote and the USB Roku unit. Disappointment #2.
I found that it was having trouble finding and keeping a connection with my home WiFi network. Granted that it was located one floor down, in the basement, I didn't seem to have this problem with my Roku II, Disappointment #3.
Disappointment #4 came when I became aware that the USB Roku unit was only capable of handling 720p in resolution. My older model was capable of delivering 1080p.
Fortunately, I was able to return the unit for a full refund and then returned my Roku II back into service. Unfortunately, I had recently upgraded to a UHD LED TV. Which is where my fifth disappointment comes in, since I was unable to stream Ultra High Definition content over either unit.
I had my Roku stick since February 2015 and I think I got a months of viewing from February - August. I'm thinking of switching over to Amazon Fire ... I'm have connection problems. I get a strong signal then I get errors 003, 005. Seem like a waste of money.
