I've got several non-smart and not-so-smart HDTVs in my house. I had been using a Roku 3 on my "Not-so-smart" Sharp Quattron 60" in the family room for a year or so. It was a far better performer than Sharp's built in "Smart" functions. Faster with WAY more content options. I've been looking at cutting the cord for a while. With the advent of Sling TV (ESPN etc.) and HBO Now, it was finally time I needed a low cost solution for the bedrooms . I figured I'd try a Roku Stick and a Mohu Leaf Antenna. Together they are the perfect cord cutting solution. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, HBO Now, Sling, Pandora, Crackle etc... plus all my local news, sports and Network TV over the antenna. Bye Direct TV!
During initial set-up the HDMI stick got very hot. Followed the instructions just like they said but the remote control did not want to work right even though the batteries were brand new from Roku, good name batteries at that. I had to take the batteries out and put them back in, even put some new batteries I had at home in it. The remote would work for a little while, then it would quit again. I can't count the times I've just wanted to throw it against the wall. I went to the website to see if others had the same complaint as I and followed the process that Roku gave to fix the problem. Well it worked for a few days and then it was back to taking out the batteries and putting them back in. The streaming stick itself is great but the remote gives the streaming stick a bad reputation in my book. I have had the Roku 2 XS for quite some time now and thought I would purchase the streaming stick for it's convenience. If it had a better remote this would be the idea product. I should have just sent it back and ordered a Roku box similar to the one I already had. But I thought it's going to get better but it didn't. My loss I guess.
The stick works fine. The remote is a mess! I returned my first one thinking that it was defective. It quit working after a month. The "new" remote stopped working a month after trading the first one in. I downloaded the Roku app on my smartphone and it works wonderfully; however, why should I pay for something that doesn't work? It's obvious that the remote has a design problem. Lower the price of the set, ditch the remote, and call it a day.
Only problem is occasionally having to unplug it and plug it back on, but we use it a lot. I like it better than another we were given, but that quality and price made me decide on this one.
Such a joy to enjoy hundreds of channels at no costs and those that I may consider enjoying on occasion are only at a minimal fee. ROKU is the absolute best innovative product and idea ever!
