I bought the Roku with intentions of making my television watching a little less expensive. This has everything I need and I can use my phone as a remote and it's portable!!! How great is that??!!!!!!
I have a Roku 3 and now a Roku Streaming Stick. Both are great devices. The Roku streaming stick is perfect on my Verizon high speed wireless router. No need for the roku 3 that has wireless unless you need voice search; headphones or hardwired connectivity.
It seems that I cannot cast directly from my Windows 7 or MacBook Air because they use Miracast for streaming. Casting supposedly works in Windows 8.1 or better with the built in Miracast.
I wish they had a verizon app like on the android devices. Then I could buy one for every TV and ditch the cable boxes.
I have had the Roku stick about a month. Works great most of the time. On a couple of occasions it has "locked up" and needs to be re-booted. Also 2-3 times the remote has lost contact with the stick and requires a reset.
NOT for travel and is way slower than the Roku box

Bought the stick for traveling and to use in hotels. The Roku Stick simply does not work in hotels, no way to log into or authenticate via the hotels log in page. It is completely worthless for hotel use. In addition to not being able to use it for travel, the stick is way slower than the Roku box units. Tried out the Stick at my house and found it is so slow compared to my Roku 2's and 3. So much lag in response time, every button has a lag time before it catches up. I'm really not sure what the Stick is supposed to be used for. It's size and Roku's advertisement for the Stick indicates that it is great for travel but it is completely useless for travel. The lag time and slow response on the Stick doesn't make it a very good choice for home use either since the Roku boxes work great in comparison. I really don't know what the Stick is supposed to be used for.
The Roku was a gift from my son for Mother's Day. It is a gift that keeps on giving. It has been moved from one TV to another. I am using it on a TV that is in the library and not connected to DirecTV. I use it to watch Netflix. AND yes, my son pays for my Netflix as an ongoing Mother's Day gift.
