I bought the Roku Streaming stick thinking it was a completely cordless HDMI 'dongle' that was a simple plug-n-play device. Unfortunately, the ads kind of hide the fact that you still need to attach a power supply. Even though the power can be supplied from a USB port, it's still not quite as clean as implied. If there was a built-in battery that charged via USB and could run for at least a few hours once disconnected it would be way better.
I have both the Lite & HD box versions and we love them. I bought this for a wall hung tv in the bedroom. In concept it was great, but it just didn't work well. The two main issues I experienced were: 1) the unit would go in a non-responsive mode and just freeze and would have a long delay or not respond at all 2) the remote control just did not work well. I found myself using the iphone app more often than not. I love the set top boxes, and think I maybe got a faulty unit?
My streaming stick cannot hold a charge & thus operate on it's own unless the charger is plugged in which defeats the purpose of having the stick and not the original roku box. The stick often has trouble connecting to the wifi. (Note: I have excellent internet in the house and no other devices have this problem). The roku remote is a useless bit of plastic at best. It drains battery when into in use because the light stays on. Received this for free through SlingTV, so I guess you get what you pay for.
I received the Roku as a gift. I used it twice and the remote stopped working. I attempted to reset it a few times and still nothing. I had to resort to using the app to use it.
Replacing cable with the Roku was the best move we've made all year. It's a win-win. I pay less money for our home entertainment (only subscribe to Netflix) and get to choose what I want to watch. Haven't seen a reality show in months!!! The Roku Stick works great, channels run almost seamlessly, and there are so many options to choose from. Some channels are duds, but there are many great ones. We love retro and artistic shows and Roku is filled with them. Intelligent TV, finally!
