Sony STRDN850 Receiver Review

I purchased the Sony STRDN850 Receiver to use as a surrond sound receiver with a Sony XBR 4 K TV. The receiver is conected to Harmon Kardon speakers and sub woofer. The sound is excellent for both music and voice. The Sony STRDN850 seemlessly connects to the Sony TV and is powered on and off with the TV. I also have an IPod connected to the USB front port and the Sony remote control controls the fuctions on the IPod.The receiver is also conneted to the internet and I list to Pandora frequently. The receiver has pleanty of power to drive the speakers and sub woofer and integrates nicely with the Sony TV.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Very functional receiver!

I did a lot of research and was tossed between a Pioneer and this unit. Tossed a coin and purchased the Pioneer. It did not perform according to the information, returned it and purchased this. Should have done that in the first place, would have saved me much aggravation! This unit performs as described and then some. We really like the ability to increase the volume of the center speaker to enhance dialogue understanding. Great unit SONY! Thank you.

Even though I'm currently only using this Receiver in a stereo setup (two Polk 45 monitor series speakers), the sound is fantastic. Sound is solid at high and low volume. No fuzz, no distortion - clear crisp and deep. I'm certain this amp will impress with an additional speaker setup.
Setup is a breeze. Inputs are ample. Bluetooth is simple and quick. Amp is almost intuitive. Features and audio options are spot on. Old school turntable sounds amazing. FLAC through USB interface is brilliant.
On screen menu and navigation is great. The Phone/Tablet App interface is solid, too. Navigation with Windows and WIFI/streaming is limited (no Windows Media Player FLAC playback). It would be nice to find alternative software capable streaming through WIFI and FLAC playback (pretty much my only beef). But there may be options I haven't found yet, so no big deal.
Great value and tons of feature to keep nerds (like myself) amused,

Solid Performance - Bad Remote Options

Powers my Bose surround sound system well. Airtunes option is essential but sometimes frustrating connection issues. Sony provides no option for running a remote control extension meaning the system needs to be exposed if you want to use the provided remote control. Seems like a design flaw as many would want to hide their audio equipment instead of displaying. The smartphone app helps mitigate this but not fully as you need to wait 10-15 seconds for the app to synch with the receiver before you can change the volume or switch the component.

Very easy to set-up, took me less than 15 minutes to be up and running.
My AR (speakers) never sound like this (thank to the BiAmp) with my itunes Match, plenty of power and my Toshiba TV look even cleaner.
I highly recommend this Sony.

The quick setup was easy and the sound is great! But, sheesh, I think it would be a good idea to not have to go onto the internet to find the manual. And even better, have something in writing to help you troubleshoot the "Code Not Valid" when you go to register for the add-ons like Pandora. That said, the good techie at the support number got me sorted out, so a tip of my hat and a gold star to him.

Outstanding Improvement

I purchased this unit as an upgrade from a more powerful Yamaha unit that would pass 3D through. I was very pleasantly surprised with the incredible sound that now comes from Big Cerwin Vegas
