Perfect match for the MDR-Z7

Before I got into the world of audiophile grade hardware, I had no idea what a headphone amp would be used for, or why they were even required. It wasn't until I tried on an old pair of high impedance headphones that I realised why all these audiophiles were obsessed with power output.
But raw power output isn't everything - you also need a high quality digital to analogue converter (DAC) to make good use of that power. For larger, desktop headphone setups, these two components are usually separate. But what if you want to take all that sound quality with you on the go? That is where something like the PHA-3 comes in. It has a very high quality DAC, a relatively large battery and a variety of inputs and outputs for use either at home or on the go while still maintaining a relatively small footprint.
I primarily use this at home, and as the title suggests, I pair them with my MDR-Z7 and balanced cable. The difference this PHA-3 makes to the Z7 is amazing - an already immersive soundstage and potent low end are enhanced - bass is given a boost in definition and clarity is improved across the board.
While it is a relatively niche product, it does what it does very well. Highly recommended, especially if you own a set of MDR-Z7 headphones.
