Losing IP Constantly
on February 24, 2017
Posted by: Nick Name
As others are saying this device loses it's connection after about 30 minutes to an hour. The only recourse is to power cycle it. I have tested it with static addresses and also on an isolated network. Same result.

Garbage

Does not maintain it's connection to the network. Needs to be continuously powered off and on again. We bought this for a USB license key to be attached to a server in a remote location, so there is nobody there to power cycle the device to reconnect it.

Same Issues As Other Customers Experiencing
on January 23, 2017
Posted by: JuliaS
The device fails to maintain a stable connection. Stays online for 20-40 minutes and then disappears from the network. Web interface is inaccessible at that point and only power-cycling is able to revive the device. Our network contains roughly 50 static IP devices all on a single subnet, so the probability of DHCP conflict is non-existent. By the look of it, drivers aren't an issue, but the internal firmware of this USB server. I'm hoping StarTech investigates problems that clients such as myself are experiencing and releases a firmware update. Otherwise the deice is practically useless.

Thank you for your feedback. Unfortunately, this device, and software were not designed to function across mulitple subnets. The device you intend to communcate with must be located on the same subnet as the computer you're connecting from. Poor reliability
on May 4, 2015

After using it for one year, the conclussion is that it provides no reliability. You need to keep power cycling the unit every day, otherwise, the unit "dissapears" from the network (loses IP address).

Hello,
Thank you for reviewing our USB1000IP USB over IP device server. We would like to offer some assistance.
This issue may be due to an IP address conflict. If you find the unit is losing its IP address every day, then the use of a static IP address may help prevent this occurrence.
A static IP address could be set up by opening the "USB Server" application and right clicking on the "USB Server", shown with its IP address. The "Server Configuration" option window provides the ability to choose a static IP address.
You can also try replacing the network cable, and connecting this unit to another Ethernet port to see if the same issue persists.
We hope this has been helpful. In the event you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us directly, and kindly reference case number 303-226387.
Thank you,

useless

I purchased this device a month ago and when I finally got around to trying it the unit would only work for 5 to 10 minutes once powered. Once the unit dies it was unreachable via ping and the StarTech app. I tried using dhcp and a hard ip address with the same results. The unit was returned to StarTech for replacement and my "new" unit behaves exactly the same way. I should have looked at the previous reviews of this product.

Hello Ed,
Thank you for taking the time to review our USB1000IP USB device server. We are sorry to hear about the connectivity issues and we would like to offer some help.
After reviewing the case notes in our system it looks like you have already tested this device with multiple systems and configurations though there is one other suggestion we have to troubleshoot this issue.
Would you be able to try the USB1000IP in an isolated environment with only the PC, the USB device server, and the USB device? This would require that both the device server and computer have static addresses set. This would eliminate any potential network related issues.
We are always here to help with our free lifetime technical support. If this did not resolve your issue, please get in touch with us and reference case #332-292128 so we can further assist you.
You can also reply here and we will be sure to follow up.
Thank You,

Convenient for Multiple Users
on July 13, 2017
Posted by: Rick60
A convenient way for several of our laptop users to share an optical drive or USB drive. Setup/configuration was simple and reconnected automatically after rebooting. Downside was sporadically it would lose the connection and we'd have to power the device on and off. Disclaimer - I received this product in exchange for an unbiased review.

Thanks for taking the time to leave your feedback. We want to apologize that our USB1000IP did not work as well as needed.
This unit can be affected by other network traffic. It can be helpful to rule out the network being used. Does the USB1000IP behave the same way when connected directly to a computer's Ethernet port?
If you would like to discuss this situation in greater details please reach out to us at: https://www.startech.com/support
Thank you.

Would Definately Recommend this Product
on July 17, 2017

I was surprised to see some of the negative reviews on this product and I went in skeptical but it didn't stop me from trying it myself. I hooked up a USB hard drive and then installed the server software. It found my hard drive immediately and connected it as if it was hooked directly to my computer. I started transferring multi-gigs worth of data and I was getting a steady 24MB/s transfer (as expected over USB.). I did not have any of the issues that other users had like the disconnecting after 30min to an hour. The device stayed online for multiple days during testing. If you right click the device in the server software there is an option to "Connect Device Automatically" so maybe that's why I didn't have any of the issues other people had? One thing I didn't like about this product is that the power cable doesn't seem to fit properly and easily pulls out of the device if you are handling it. Otherwise, if you have a USB device that you want to put on the network then I would definitely recommend this product.
