No Bluetooth HID support = a mostly useless piece of hardware
on October 14, 2014

Summary pretty much says it all. Without Bluetooth HID, this device is completely worthless to me. Not sure why Microsoft would purposely leave out this technology that everyone else includes on their basic minimum required features list to be considered a "mobile smart phone." Things such as keyboards, barcode scanners etc. aren't going to work. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this phone due to that core feature missing. Descriptions and features lists should clearly state this is not a feature. It's like buying a Jaguar and finding out when you go to start it for the first time, they don't believe in electric starters.
Regardless, if it wasn't for that missing feature. This would have been a keeper. So, here's everything I liked and didn't like which stood out. Overall, it would be a wonderful phone I'd highly recommend if not for the missing HID feature.
Pros:
- Camera: Simply amazing!
- Supply of Apps: I didn't find this to be an issue really. I use a fair amount of apps on android only one was missing (American Express). Here's the thing though... the mobile browser is so powerful and trouble free, combined with the size of the screen, i found no need for your average site/business app alternative to browsing.
- Browser: Very fast. The desktop site only setting always works (unlike chrome in Android)
- Ease of navigation: Tiles/windows 8 is much more efficient / productive environment.
- Speed: Nothing to wait for with this phone or windows OS, all very snappy.
- Navigation: The Drive app over all is a good comp to google nav and far better than the iOS app. It has a speedometer and posted speed notices and notifies you with a friendly little beep when you go over much. It is crisp / clean looking and I've had no bad directions or confusing statements etc. Also, it uses yards as a default which I find nice.
- Customization: Definitely as customizable as an android. Anyone stating otherwise just didn't know what they were doing or maybe had 8.0 instead of 8.1. There is pretty much nothing you can't change.
- Notifications: The reading of text messages, notices on top of tile contacts, email, vm everything is very nice.
- Battery: This is a pro and con (see below). But, the battery charges very fast! More so than normal I think.
Cons:
- Heat: This thing gets roasting! Especially when charging and using simultaneously
- Battery life is not very good. Even when turning everything down and turning off features for battery saver, you'll get 2 days out of it at most if you don't use it much. Example: Sitting at the Dr's office reading the news at 99% battery with full features enabled. After 30 minutes just reading, sending a couple of text messages and nothing else, I was at 92%.
- Lack of voice integration. On android, I can pretty much use voice to text for any sort of input box. Not so here. Given, Cortana can always get you want you want. But, let's say I'm already in the drive application and want to change an address or destination, you are stuck typing or going back to Cortana and asking for directions.
- Drive app missing features and bugs: For 1, you don't get the alternate routes like you do with google maps. Also it doesn't give you the easy to follow 1, 2, 3 lanes for turning left or the little icons which show you which lanes go where. It doesn't seem to really show traffic ahead even though it says that's a feature it just doesn't seem to work most of the time / not as reliable as google. Overall though, my main complaint is when I'm using navigation and on the phone at the same time. It will switch you out of nav and back to your call screen if the phone moves at all. Also, if you receive a call while in navigation, it won't switch back without about 6 taps and some waiting for the screen to go out of black mode. It's just plain buggy here.

Great Phone but beware!

Love my phone. Best I have ever had. Call quality, camera, etc.....all great!
BUT they are not updating this to 8.1 and a lot of stuff coming out will only run on 8.1. Verizon blames Microsoft/Nokia and they blame Verizon. So a top quality phone from a top quality carrier.....but no update.
My kids got free windows phones with 8.1 installed. See the burn. By low end get the feature but not with the high end?

The battery is not long lasting, I can't upgrade my 8.0, so the good apps are not reachable.
I bought from Verizon with thoughts of upgrades in my system. Now I know it won't happen.
looking for a different phone!

Though I enjoy the overall function of the phone I was told the 8.1 update would be available in July! We are now in December and no update! What's the deal?

The phone it self is excellent. But I am disappointed by the delayed availability of 8.1 which was one of the reasons for buying this phone.

Easy to use, high quality product. It matches the iphone. Much better than an android fragmented product. Updates are good and come often unlike android phones. Im looking forward to the cortana update. Its a great phone with a good ecosystem and I love teh onedrive cloud. Seriously check it out.
