This lens is solid. Good weight and balance. It has a fast focus, even in low light. It is clear, sharp, bokeh is amazing. I use it for landscape and animal photography on my full frame camera. It allows you to really push your creative limits. Yes, it is expensive. But I have no regrets. I'm sorry I didn't get it sooner.

This is a great lens! For years I've relied heavily on various zoom lenses but I wanted to give a fixed one a try for my landscape photos. The difference between 24mm on a zoom and this 24mm is noticeable and worth the expense. I might add that it works quite well for close as well as for distant shots.

I was hesitant to purchase this lens since it was released 10 years ago in 2008. I was worried that ten years of technological advancement would have rendered this obsolete, but I was pleasantly surprised. The f/1.4 produces beautiful bokeh in images and still obliterates the background when needed, even at 24mm. The close focus distance means that it is very versatile for many different kinds of photography; it can focus on things less than 1 foot away! The lens is very sharp at f/4 or above. Very minimal distortion for a 24mm. It has less distortion than the 24-70mm f/2.8L II. I use this to film in dark places like nightclubs and this thing is a beast. I love the low light capabilities. It’s been a week of owning this and it hasn’t left my camera.

My Favorite Lens for Vlogging. And for everything, actually.

This has tons of bokeh if you want it and with the mk IV auto focus sensitivity turned up it works wonderfully.
Also, in a completely different application, it's amazing for model photography specifically full-body. Again, amazing bokeh and really clear images. Some distortion of you're close but that's to be expected with a 24mm.

I recently purchased the new D5 Mark II Canon camera. My intentions are to replace my current Canon camera with the net D5 for my underwater photography.
Last week I purchased the Canon EF 24mm f/1.4L II USM lens to use in an Ikelite housing with dual DS160 Ikelite strobes.
Over the last few days I have taken lots of images with the new D5 and the new EF 24mm lens. I love the lens and think that I have made a great purchase. The lens will focus as close as about 9 inches which is important in underwater photography.
My images are clear and sharp. Don't kid yourself by "settling" for a cheaper lens as the higher cost is worth the money, assuming the quality of your images are important to you.
I would recommend this lens for any wide angle close focus use in underwater photography.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus

Easily bests the previous version in every way

I had to send the first copy back because of back focus problems. I have never had a quality control issue with any of the dozen L lenses I have owned and used so I was very surprised to find the 24L II not living up to my expectations. The second copy performed flawlessly! This lens is better than the original 24L in every way: center and edge sharpness, chromatic aberration, smoother bokeh, weather seals, nicer build quality. It performs at least as good as my 35L. I highly recommend testing your copy first or buy from a dealer with a no hassle exchange/return policy.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus
Cons: unfortunate sample variation

All around excellence

I rented one of these to travel to South America. I spent 5 days in Colombia and 5 days hiking through the Andes in Peru. This is a tough lens. Well built, professional grade.
The image quality is absolutely fantastic. I can't speak highly enough about this lens in terms of image quality. The shots I took at f/8 were so sharp I didn't even touch them in post. Contrast and clarity are the absolute best (every bit as good as the 35L and 135L). I was using this on a 1D mk iii. I have seen some reviews of the auto focus being off, but my experience is nothing short of positive. I only shoot at f/1.4 when I have a single autofocus point selected anyway so then it's my fault it the right thing is not in focus. I don't trust any camera that much. Speed is excellent.
Manual focus is great, I always use the hyper focal length and manual focus when shooting landscapes. The focus ring is really smooth. Distortion is next to nothing.
Spend the money, learn to use it. The image and build quality is everything you would expect out of an L prime.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images
Cons: cant think of one

I've had the opportunity to shoot with both the 24L and 24Lii. Although the heftier price tag may give reason for pause initially, the fantastic results you get with this lens will instantly erase all doubts. (That is unless you get a bad copy like one of the reviewers above.)
The focus is very accurate. My images are quite sharp wide open @ f/1.4. Overall, I can really see and feel the improvements from its predecessor.
If you're looking for a fast 24mm, and have the budget for this lens, you will not regret it.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus
