The Dread of Shred
on November 21, 2015
Posted by: Jaden
Researched several brands prior to purchasing a Fellowes. Previously accustomed to using a high capacity office machine and found this model adequate for light home use. The shred bin fills fast and paper remains in the blades requiring removing the pieces by hand. The pull out bin doesn't glide in or out smoothly and it's a bit messy. Depending on paper thickness, there will be a drag in performance, less is always best.
Very impressive and durable product. Handles 12 sheets maximum but pushing any device to its limits invites problems of course. It shreds 12 pages with ease but runs slower if you do this on a regular basis. The motor is powerful and grabs documents into the shredder with force. Safe operation is instantaneous when you contact the feed tray. I have had zero jams and shredded a 25 gallon trash bag of documents with no heat problems or jams whatsoever. Very impressed with the quality and durability. This will be my home security shredder and minor business use when needed. Worth the reputation, money and investment for any heavy home/business user. Great warranty and reputation with this brand. I have always trusted them over the years.
Pros: Quality Construction, Warranty, Shreds Credit Cards, Staples and CDs, Service Guarantee, Safety Features, Secure Cut Size, Jam Resistance, space saver with power
Cons: Sheet Capacity, Quiet Operation, 12 sheets maximum slows machine too much
I would recommend this to a friend!

Shredder for Home Use
on June 8, 2014

While you pay a reasonably high price for this cross cut shredder, with normal household use you are lucky if it last longer than one year. It is cheaper to use a shredding service than to buy a Fellows Shredder. We are very disappointed with the effectiveness of this product.
Pros: Safety Features
Cons: Quiet Operation, Jam Resistance
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Horrible
on October 18, 2012

I purchased this shredder replacing another Fellowes shredder I had for about 4 years. It was awesome however I wanted something with more pages per pass and power.
One word: Horrible. It has the power and sheets per pass is great but when emptying, makes such a mess, even when I use oil. I pull out bin from the side and the paper just comes all out and always makes a mess. What is the point of having a shredder that shreds faster and better if you have to expend extra time cleaning up? I just dont want to sit there and clean up after a shredder. I, just as anyone else, wants to empty the shredder and keep moving. Not clean up after the thing.
The shredder I had before was mess free. If this shredder were one that sits on top of its basket and only have to lift it up to empty, it would be amazing. I'm pretty upset that I hate this thing as much as I do.
And its very loud. Even for a shredder.
Pros: Sheet Capacity, Quality Construction, Safety Features, Jam Resistance
Cons: Mess Reduction, Quiet Operation
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I really liked the design of this shredder. I really liked how it performed. But, and this is a big but, it just stopped working in less than a year. You plug it in and nothing happens. Very disappointed.
Pros: Sheet Capacity, Shreds Credit Cards, Staples and CDs, Safety Features, Secure Cut Size, Jam Resistance
Cons: Quality Construction
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Perormance
on November 3, 2014

This is the best shredder that I have used to-date. Although I am not a heavy user, it works perfectly for me. It shreds quickly and easily. Staples in your paper creates no problems. It also shreds your old credit cards perfectly. It looks very stylish. And I love the safety feature so I won't have to worry about a childs fingers getting into the teeth of the shredder - and it does work! The only one issue that I have with this shredder is if you have a lot of shredding to do in one go, it does get messy. Because the last bunch of papers shredded stay in the mechanism until the next bunch pushes it into the bin, the shredding's protrude from the underside of the shredding unit. Therefore as you are doing a lot of shredding the bin fills up quickly. When you pull the bin out to empty, the protruding shreddings scrape off the top layer of shredded paper, and this will land inside the compartment where your bin would fit; and also on the floor as you pull the bin out. Of course the key is to empty the bin regularly. Easier said than done when you are trying to get as much done in as little time possible. That said, I would still recommend this shredder.
Pros: Sheet Capacity, Quality Construction, Shreds Credit Cards, Staples and CDs, Safety Features, Jam Resistance

Won't stop running
on December 16, 2014

Nonstop running makes this shredder very dangerous. I returned to a burning smell and found it running on its own. Despite several attempts to clean the sensor area, the problem persists. Do NOT leave this shredder plugged in or in standby.
Response from fellowes.comBy AS, CS, December 16, 2014
Thank you for contacting us to make us aware of the difficulties that you encountered with your PS-12 shredder. We are sorry for the run on issue that you experienced. As you are aware, the shredder unit has auto sensors which will continually communicate back and forth with each other. If something interferes with the communication of these sensors (dirt/oil build up, paper being inserted into the entry, etc.) the unit will automatically start running. In most cases, a simple cleaning will resolve the issue and we are sorry that this method did not work for you.
In addition to the sensors mentioned above, this unit also features auto shut off as a method of protection against overheating. The smell that you discovered was more than likely due to the motor being warm instead of actual burning. When the unit reaches a certain temperature it will shut down and once cooled, it will begin running again if the sensors are dirty. Your shredder was most likely running through this cycle continually until you returned to find it running and shut it off. Please note that the unit should be turned off when not in use.
Since cleaning the sensors did not resolve your run on issue, please call our customer support team so that we can assist you in further troubleshooting as well as discuss our shredder warranty. Please have the unit available when you call.
