Ok experience

I have been doing my own return for many years and have used turbo tax. I found this years program to be a bit irritating. I know what form I need and how everything should flow. Your program caters to those individuals who are novice. I found it troublesome to enter basic information. I recommend that you have a choice for users at the beginning, the interview route for novice and an a more efficient path for experienced preparers.
Thanks

Major Mistake Not Caught

In the initial phase, TT asks about dependents. It only asks if they earned more than $3,700 in wages. Once you answer "yes" it tells you they do not qualify as a dependent. Only after you get through ALL the questions and get ready to submit, does it tell you it needs to ask a few more questions about dependents. It then asks about FT college status, age, etc, which leads to adding them back as a qualifying dependent. Unfortunately, I had already completed my qualifying students return mistakenly listing her self-exemption and educational expenses and sent it in. That blocked me from sending in my return claiming them as a dependent with additional educational expenses. The net "cost" to me was $2,300 in lost refunds. To fix both returns requires a 1040X ammended return, that can only be mailed in and takes up to 3 months to process. I decided to take the loss for the sake of getting a 7-day refund for each of us. Turbo Tax needs to ask about adult student status up front, not a click away from submission and printing. It also need to tell you that amended returns can only be mailed in and to triple check everything before electronically sending (or at least to wait unti the primary return is done before sending adult students returns in).

Pretty Good Job

Overall, very nice and fairly simple to use. Sometimes data entry might seem almost Over-simplified to someone with any tax-savvy since it's difficult to understand what the end result of some entries will be. But it all works out Ok in the end. My biggest disappointment is with trying to get `Help'. It seems unwieldy and difficult and I am not even sure I ever got to the correct area to get my question answered. Whether I did or not, In any case, I never was able to get a satisfactory answer to my question. I ultimately filed my return without knowing the answer. I must simply hope that TurboTax knows better than I do and rely on the program's "knowledge" but it does make me a little uncomfortable.
