Too automated
on March 6, 2012

I first started entering data manually then later downloaded data from Fidelity. Turbo Tax double counted the entries. I was able to delete all the manual entries but Turbo Tax still double counted the Tax Exempt Interest and I found no way to correct it. When I overrode with the correct value, Turbo Tax would not allow me to e-file. So my return went in with a known error. Not a good thing.

Would like to see a gauge or something showing how far along we are in the startup. Cannot do taxes by hand....too complicated and has been for years.

Harder to use than previous versions of Basic; assumes if block 2a of 1099-R is blank, that amt in block 1 is NOT taxable, and, converts "UNKNOWN" which is printed on the federal form, into a blank! All subsequent calculations become grossly in error, with no "logic warning" or check, even after analysis! This makes it difficult to locate the problem, assisted by not being able to preview the forms. The product-selling ads are annoying, and degrade trust in the program's calculations. I plan to try a competitor next year.

Experience with 2011 Turbotax

While Turbotax asks for state income tax information, it then lumps together all W-2 taxes withheld and previous over-payments for the Itemized Deduction summary. Given that it lists just about everything else, it should list state taxes as a separate line item; the user must verify that the number has been entered on Schedule A. Every year, I find that it takes longer and longer to use your product than if I had simply filled out the Federal forms by hand. There are too many "ads" - I already paid for your program and do not appreciate the constant prodding for your other goodies. My colleagues have been slowly but surely shifting to other products that are easier to use and contain fewer distruptions.

price jump of the online version
on March 27, 2012

thought I bought the online premier version for $50, basically $30 off the normal price. when I went to efile and pay, Turbo wanted $80. Turns out, I needed to file by March 23....not just start the taxes. Well I tried to file on the 24th. Turbo tax said their was nothing they could do. Now the fine print says that you can do the state taxes but the kicker is the extra $45 to be able to print and efile. Outrageous cost. Feels just a tad shady to me.

Provides peace of mind, thorough filing with minimum effort, great alternative to hiring a preparer.
