Great eBook reader

Much better then the more expensive ones from the competition, and MANY more features. Supports more eBook formats, supports mp3 files so you can listen to your own music while reading, comes with a 2gb card with some decent books (all classics). Only thing missing is a back-light, it's hard to read in the dark, but in sunlight, or by a night lamp, I have no problems.
Also has several font sizes if you have eye problems, and very easy to use, I never even had to look at the manual.

So Far, I'm Really Liking This
on February 15, 2010

I was dithering between the Libre and the Sony ebook reader, but chose this one because of the available formats, and because I decided that I'd prefer the seamless page turning of the LCD reflective e-paper screen to the flashing of the e-ink readers.
The "e-paper" portion of the reader is slightly grey-green as opposed to that of the Kindle or other e-ink readers, but I've found that to be negligible. I've read in sunlight, twilight and incandescent light and have had no problem seeing the words on the page. I have read for hours without eyestrain. The letters are crisp with good contrast. There are seven levels of zoom which should make it viewable to all users.
I've found it easy to "flip" the pages. There's a up-down slide control on the left side, left-right click buttons on the lower left front, and left-right directional buttons on the lower right front. Accessing menu items can be done via the directional buttons on the lower right front, or by the alpha-numeric buttons on the right side. So there's a number of options that would work for either a right-handed or left-handed user, IMO.
The Libre can also play music (MP3) - there's a headphone plug (a pair of earbuds comes with it). It also has a feature to play music in the background. I haven't used either of these functions yet, mainly because I don't need them.
So far, I've found the battery usage to be as advertised. There are settings with different auto shut-off times, to conserve the battery power if you put the reader down for a while. There's also an auto page-turn function, which could be useful for either fast readers or folks with a handicap. You can set bookmarks, though if you shut off the reader, when you restart it it will open to your last reading page. You can have multiple books in progress and just access your current page via the "Recently Read" tab.
You can store ebooks on the reader itself or on an SD card. A 2GB SD card comes with the reader loaded with 100 classic ebooks in .txt format from the Project Gutenberg site. Those 100 books take up almost no space on the SD card, so I could see easily putting hundreds and hundreds of books on the card.
It's very easy to load books onto the Libre - simple drag-and-drop on the computer works. It's easy to set up specific folders to suit your reading needs. Downloads are quick. There are so many sources for ebooks out there now that, for me anyway, the wireless feature of a Kindle is entirely unnecessary.
It comes with its own carrying pouch, so you don't have to buy one. I carry the Libre around with me in my pocketbook. It also comes with an AC adapter AND a USB cable so you can charge it either way.
I've found that I prefer the .epub format for reading books, but others might prefer the other formats. A very useful program for converting ebooks into the format you prefer is the freeware program, Calibre (you can easily search for it online).

Perfect!

I've been wanting an ebook reader for some time, and I chose the Libre mostly because the price is nicer than Sony or Kindle. I was also happy to see that is has an mp3 player on it, and that it came with a 2gb memory card preloaded with books. It is easy to figure out, comfortable to hold, navigate and read. I'm not sure if higher priced alternatives would have a crisper looking screen or not, as I haven't used any other one myself, but I don't have any complaints about the screen on the Libre. All the things that I might have wanted (touch screen, or larger screen) are available for more money and I chose not to spend more so I can't complain about this item at all. I do wish I'd gotten the black one; perhaps the contrast between the black finish and the screen would be more dynamic but I can't say for sure. Again, I chose white because it was cheaper (at the time). It comes with everyhing you need, purchasing a case or cords isn't necessary. The only thing I foresee myself changing in the future is the memory card size, maybe, even tho I'm not using very much on the one it came with as of yet. If you are a budget minded person looking for a quality luxury, this is the thing for you!
Pros: travelling, at home

"Libre" Rocks
on May 27, 2010

I do a lot of reading. Carrying library books to doctor appointments was getting tiresome (and sometimes heavy). My salvation is the Libre. In addition, some books included with the eBook reader, include several titles that I have always regretted not having read. Now, I can take them with me, conveniently and comfortably. Best purchase I've made in years!!
