Essential gear, questionable quality.

I'm on my third 3M ergo mouse in four years. It really is the only thing I've found that relieves my forearm strain, but the device seems to have several common and frustrating points of failure.
My first mouse was the wireless version, which worked well until eventually succumbing to the stutter and lag issue that many people seem to experience. I tried to troubleshoot it, but could not find a solution.
I ended up buying the wired version, hoping that would prevent that issue from returning. Unfortunately, the wired version appears to be flimsier. The click rocker ended up wearing down to the point that it stopped clicking on the left side.
So I bought another wireless version, hoping that maybe my first was just a dud. I've had this one for about a year and a half and it appeared I was home-free, but the other day the stutter started. It seems to be a driver issue, but there doesn't seem to be any official support for this.
These devices are not cheap, so this is very disappointing. 3M likely has little incentive to make a better product, as those of us who rely on this devices have nowhere else to go.
Very unfortunate, and a blight on the usually-excellent 3M brand.

I am on perhaps my fifth Renaissance mouse, from when they used balls. Clearly I like it a lot. The good: it is the only mouse I know that puts your hand in the handshake position AND takes the weight of your hand and arm off the table, so that your arm muscles move the mouse instead of your wrist. That lets me spend 12 hours a day in front of the computer, if needed. The less good: The weight of the hand rests mostly on the right side of the base, especially below the heel of the hand, where the base becomes narrow. The left side of the base takes almost no weight. And the base glides on five small, round, flat feet of slippery plastic (probably HDPE), almost paper thin, and one foot is right below the heel of the hand, almost right below the 3M logo. So that one foot takes much more weight than all the others. Believe it or not, that foot eventually wears out from friction and pressure, and disappears. Now the feet are uneven, and the mouse will then rock a little on its remaining feet, making the cursor leap around the screen. Also, a metal screw that secures the base protrudes out of the base slightly, and when there is no plastic foot providing clearance, the screw will scratch and drag on the table (I use a thin, hard mouse pad.) How to fix: I can think of several ways to fix these issues. One is to make the pads much wider and thicker. I notice many mice have a longish bar of material underneath to take wear. I would recommend only three large pads, so the mouse never rocks from uneven wear. Another way is to make the entire base from HDPE, so the load is spread and the wear is much slower. It would also help to replace that pan-head screw with a flat-head, so it doesn't protrude at all from the base. But the best approach, in my view, would be to redesign the mouse so that the base is centered on the heel of the hand, and not on the stalk. and move the stalk out to the left edge of the base. Thank you!

I'd pay double if it were more robust

I've used these mice for about 20 years, since before 3M was making them. They work well ergonomically, but I wish they were higher quality. Buttons eventually break, and even when new things are wiggly and more noisy than necessary. How about making a deluxe version that is really crisp, tight, and lasts well? I'd pay two or three times as much for that.

Best Pain Relief - This Mouse!

Once you get used to it (about a week), you cannot go back to using any other mouse. I can't stress how much this helps relieve wrist pain and even shoulder and neck pain. The ergonomics are perfect.

Best Ergonomics, Absolute Worst Quality

I've been using this type of 3M mouse for maybe 13 years or so. I am on mouse No. 5 and about to go to mouse no. 6. Mouse after mouse, the left button starts failing after a couple years of use. The left click either doesn't register, doesn't release, or registers and releases randomly when trying to hold the click down and drag. It becomes impossible to use. I am sick of replacing it, but this is the ONLY mouse that prevents me from having a great deal amount of pain from clicking all day/every day at work. Unfortunately the durability and quality of this mouse is absolute garbage. :(

Unusable. Stick with the wired version.

I've used the3M ergonomic mouse for over 15 years. It's great. The wireless version is un-usable. There is an immense amount of lag, the cursor disappears, the button clicks lag. I thought it was my fault so I searched for a driver to install to fix the issue... none exist. Throwing it right in the garbage.

Needs to be a little more rugged

I have had several of the large mice. I started with the wired version, then moved to the wireless. They have all worked very nicely, until they fall off a table, or get packed for shipping, and didn't survive the trip to a new office.
I am a bit sad as the one I have is out of warranty, and it isn't working as well as it should. It fell off my desk the other day. It might not have been replaced anyway as falling off a table isn't exactly a manufacturing defect. I just wish they were made in a slightly more rugged way.
The neck tends to be the fragile part. The neck breaks in two, and the buttons misalign - especially the "middle" mouse button along the back of the upright column. There is no way to put Humpty back together again, the middle mouse button becomes highly unreliable.
Having said that it's still my favorite ergo mouse on the market. I find it to be comfortable and works well with my large hands.
