Overall for the price it's not a bad tv. My old 42" Philips actually has a better picture. This one it seems that you cannot get the settings to a point where you can discern as much detail in dark scenes. But on any HD signal that is sufficiently bright it does have a great picture. I did buy the Disney calibration dvd in an effort to help the picture quality, but unfortunately, the settings you may adjust have been limited by Sharp
Pros: large screen great during bright scenes
Cons: lack of detail in dark scenes, limited settings adjustments with this model
I would recommend this to a friend!

Nice big screen with lots of potential.
Bad decision at Sharp to purposely not include needed menu adjustments for the picture. If this unit had gamma adjustment it would be a good buy. It crushes several layers of black so you lose the detail in dark scenes and you can not correct for this with the set.
I was able to overcome the issue by adjusting the Gamma on my Home Theater PC to +3 and now it has a beautiful picture, but most people will not have this option. You can read reviews of this set all over the web that complain about the lack of detail in dark scenes.
Hopefully someone at Sharp will read this and release firmware so that you can adjust the Gamma for the set. It would be an awesome TV then.
Pros: big, efficient, quality hardware
Cons: insufficient picture adjustments

Not what I expected from Sharp

Low, low build quality. Very surprised at Sharp.
This TV has the worst clouding issues I have ever seen. Puffy white clouds cover nearly every inch of the screen in any even slightly dark scene, whether it is a movie, video game, or just switching inputs. Dialing down the backlight doesn't help and just degrades picture quality. The clouds are so prominent they are even noticeable during regular TV viewing, when there are no dark scenes, and end up making the screen look splotched. The factory picture settings are quite atrocious, and I'm surprised Sharp programmed with such a terrible picture.. After some calibrating I managed to get the image viewable, and was rather impressed.
The clouding, however, is so bad it ruins the TV. If you search around the net, you'll find other people with severe clouding issues too. I would not recommend this product.
Pros: nice picture after calibrating
Cons: horrible clouding, uneven lighting resulting in screen splotches, terrible picture presets

An "OK" TV

This TV is big. No question about it. But in exchange for size you sacrifice several things..That "look out your window" experience is missing with this TV. The image quality is average and it isnt the most crisp or clear. Good darks and good response on 1080p source material. Unfortunately, football looks horrendous. Live action seems to really bring out the flaws for some reason. The grass suffers from "green push"-over saturated and glaring green. Unfortunately, the menu is lacking and it doesn't feature individual controls for RGB adjustments. Sound is another concern. The native sound is not goodm but that is commonplace for many flat screen TVs. The optical port on this TV doesn't work with certain signals (as per Sharp tech support). If you're using HDMI into the TV, the optical out for sound will not work. So if you have an older receiver for your home theater, you're out of luck.
Pros: large screen
Cons: mediocre image quality, sound compatibility, weak image control
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Maybe you should read your instruction manual before you return your t.v. I have the same model, and it works just fine. You will only get 1080p from Blu-Ray, and some game consoles, even on satellite TV . Don't forget an HDMI cable. I think you didn't comprehend what you were doing wrong, sorry not to offend you but next time before you come online an bash this t.v make sure you tried to fix your issue.

GREAT DEAL

First time I've purchased a set without personally seeing the picture quality first. The thing about HD TV's is that if the channel is not transmitting in HD and the program was not recorded in HD it really magnifies the flaws. After a while you will know which channels are really HD and which are in bad need of new equipment. So the trick is you have to consider the source. Blu Ray and gaming is phenomenal. Old analog dvds can be painful to watch as it has a hard time deciphering depth. And if the camera pans it will create weird waves as it tries to compensate. Caught a few games this weekend and they were sharp and crisp with amazing detail. But then again those were Networks with state of the art equipment. I was lucky in that my whole system needed an upgrade. So a new receiver and a new dvd player have made it a joy to watch. Definitely Recommend this unit. And local cable company transmits at 60 hz so the 120 hz is overkill. Called a friend who installs cable for a living and he walked me through the settings. Consider professional help to optimize performance. No clouding issues with mine. Sound ok on its own better through receiver and external speakers. Have had it for a month now.
Pros: size, price, picture, ability to connect old and new equipment, value
Cons: too heavy for one person to hoist into place., newer models much lighter

Not happy with it

Bought two of these. One for my girlfriend and one for myself. Hooked up both to different cable services so its not the cable service. Football games farther shots look blurry, writing on the screens look blurry. Couldn't even make out the NY on the giant helmets. Watching anything in 420 is unwatchable.
The one Blue ray movie we looked at looked really good though.
Probably going to return them and going with a different brand.

Some people complained about the sound but you shouldn't go for the tv because of the sound but the picture-the sound can be easily fixed with the right speakers and at the right price (i have bose speakers so it sounds great#. I play high movement/frame rated games like MW3 and Skyrim on it and the 120HZ frame rate can keep up with it without sacrificing the picture quality. Pic Quality overall is pretty amazing simply because you can control the contrast of darks and brights...even give it a window of how dark or bright it can/should be all the time. Optical output works fine #unlike the last review: BTW you need to use RC cables-the red and white ones-to redirect the sound that is coming from your HDMI conection and have it go to your external speakers -IE bose or home theater system...i almost gave up on it when i first connected it until i figured that out lol)
Pros: great picture/options, gigantic screen, bright
Cons: okay sound
