poorly though down draft

we installed all Bosch appliances.
Downdraft was poorly thought, the 30 inch cooktop generates too much heat that is absorbed by the downdraft and heats up the unit, the whirring inside melts and creates short circuits, I have to replace the wires and the motor of the down draft

Did not perform properly

My vent stopped raising completely and so the motor will not turn on if the unit isn't fully elevated. My new home has a newer version of the same one and IT IS DOING THE SAME THING! A repair guy opened the face of the motor and tweaked the shaft that raises the unit and it started working. Poor design that should have been improved on the newer model....disappointed that Bosch hasn't remedied the problem on the newer version.

I've had mine since 2009 and have never had a problem. Paired with induction cooktop, which I also love! I'm about to buy another, along with the induction slide-in range and dishwasher for our new home. Wish they still made the convection built-in microwave.

The merits of venting....

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We purchased our unit in Jan 2011, and I installed it myself. It's now Aug. 2017 and the unit has been a terrific investment. To minimize fan noise in the kitchen, we purchased the remote blower option, and located that module under the house, about 10 ft. away, near to the exterior exhaust vent. The only sound we hear in the kitchen is air being pulled into the filters. A fan setting of 1 is adequate for a pot on a back burner; two pots probably justifies a setting of 2, and a setting of 3 will easily pull exhaust from front and back burners, but if your house is well-sealed, you may need to open a kitchen window too so the exhaust fan has an adequate air supply.
We've experienced the same issue other reviewers have noted: Before lowering the unit, you need to make sure nothing is in the way, as the wings on the top of the unit extend out 2 inches on each side. We've pinched the odd kitchen spoon or worse, an appliance power cord, a time or two, and if you have inquisitive children in your house, it might be a safety consideration, but I like to think that Bosch engineers (and lawyers) have factored that into their design.
The filters clean up very nicely in the dishwasher and Bosch makes a stainless steel conditioner that keeps everything looking like new (I highly recommend the conditioner).
We've had one disappointment which turned out to be our fault. About 18 months ago, after pinching a spoon under one of the wings, the unit started making a shuddering noise occasionally when it was lowered. We live in remote western Oregon and service isn't easily arranged (it costs more for driving time than most repairs), so we've put up with the noise. Recently, I was cleaning behind the filters and noticed the jack screw that raises/lowers the exhaust assembly didn't seem to have much lubrication. A light application of white lithium grease to the jack screw instantly stopped the shuddering noise. I wish I'd noticed it 18 months ago. Bosch might consider adding that as a periodic homeowner maintenance task.
