Bought 10 of these for my high school video class. 3 years later, 8 still going strong. These are used daily by 160 students. Very durable.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Overall a decent camera with one issue

I enjoy this camera but it does have one issue. The software or rather the built in mic. When taken outside and shooting on windy day or even a light breezy the built in mic tries to filter out the wind, which it does but the recovery time for the built in mic to return to normal is abnormally long. I am talking about a good ten second gap where the audio is severally effected because of this recovery time. Most camera's the recovery time is a few seconds but with this camera its a very noticeable 10 seconds. So when you go to edit your video, you have this basically ten second gap of audio where your speech is ten times weaker than the rest of the video audio. Video software is unable to increase the volume so then you have to run it through some type of audio software. Its definitely a camera software issue and I was hoping for a firmware update but I think canon has moved with other models and this issue will never be fixed.

Works For Me

I cannot speak to the Wi-Fi features as I had no interest in using them. Computer connectivity is not an issue since I added a SD card for storage and just remove that for uploading files to my PC.
That all said, the images are bright and crisp. I shot over 70 minutes worth of video and then watched them on the camera. After all that the battery still said it had over 20 minutes of usage left.
The setup and menus are fairly easy to navigate. I have never owned such a device and I was shooting good looking videos in short order.
From my research all such devices suffer the same problem: windy conditions make the audio recording poor at times if you are standing more than about 6 feet away. Mine was on a tripod recording me in front of it and when the wind gusted, the recorded sound suffered. I have since bought a clip on microphone with a 20 foot cord and that problem is solved. When recording while holding, the camera's microphone worked well no matter how much wind was blowing. It all comes down to what you plan to use it for. ;-)
No matter what, the image quality is great and that was the main purpose of my purchase.
It is light in weight and at first I thought is might be broken out of the box since there was a rattling coming from inside. It might be the coming from the lens cover's two plastic pieces - it is hard to tell. In any case, the camera works flawlessly. As it says in the title, this camera works for me.
Pros: good battery life, Accurate, Vivid Colors, Compact Design, excellent image quality, easy to use

Great Camera

Hello,
This is a great Camera, do not think that just because people give it a bad review that it is a bad camera. I have read the bad reviews on this camera and 100% of the time the bad reviews are due to the user being lazy and not wanting to learn how to use the device. When i first started using the camera i had issues too until i read the directions. Great camera, good features and great quality. I would recommend this camera.

Loaded with features

I was having problems with camera motor noise when recording with the camera's built in mics.
I called Canon tech support and learned that if I used an external mic, the noise would go away. The key is that the external mic has to HAVE ITS OWN POWER SOURCE (i.e battery).
I bought the Polson PLM-10 mic and it made the improvement in my sound quality.
I'm right handed and I found the left handed LCD panel was a little awkward to navigate. That's a small adjustment for me to make.
The WiFi control is a nice feature to have. There is a few second delay when using the Pixlea Camera control with my iPad, but its minor.

Can't connect
on April 30, 2014
Posted by: Secret
I bought this camera specifically for the ability to connect when I am not home and to use my Android phone to control the camera. Problem is, after DAYS of trying, the APP still can't recognize the camera. I've followed the directions 100% and it still isn't working. I am going to return the camera if these features can't be used the way they were designed.
Cons: difficult phone connectivity, difficult instructions for use., terrible help files

Troubles

I've had HF R50 for about a year. Haven't used it all that much, but when I did it was not all that great, vary hard to see screen in direct sun light and controls are not easy to use. Now it will not play back, tried every thing in controls. No use. This is a BAD choice in cameras. My last canon video camera lasted over 10 years. Now this is my last Canon camera...
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Cannot transfer videos
on October 8, 2014

Have owned Canon VIXIA HF R50 for two weeks. Each time I record a video and attempt to transfer it to PC, it fails. I am following instructions. My only solution is to attempt to return this camcorder because my purpose is to record and replay on computer. Otherwise camcorder is useless to me.
