Could Have Been the Perfect Point and Shoot

This is my 4th Canon camera in 5 years. However, ever since introduction of the CMOS sensors in the Elph series, the quality of still shots has awfully declined. In a thorough side-by-side test of this 12MP camera and a 5MP camera from a very popular smartphone, the 510HS produced pictures with the same level of detail as the smartphone, which was very disappointing. In other words, it appears that my non CMOS 5 year old Canon SD800 is capable of taking more detailed shots at 7MP. That is why I have set the camera to shoot at half resolution and I am getting the same results.
The battery life is also VERY VERY short with this camera. 20 minutes of continuous recording will run your battery completely dry. If you are taking pictures alone without flash, the battery will last you less than 3 hours. I have run out of battery at almost every event I have been to.
Canon did a great job with the lens and the construction, as well as the software, but the image sensor and battery don't seem to hold up to the rest of the design. This is perhaps my last point-and-shoot from Canon.
Pros: superior lens, great zoom, great hd video with is, rugged body and touch screen pannel, availability of manual mode under (p), great shortcuts, record button always on screen, good image processing
Cons: extremely short battery life, very low image detail (equivilent to 5mp), choppy gui, slightly insensitive touchscreen
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

takes good video, average quality photos - but the control which zooms (which was why I purchased it) sticks and in spite of sending it in for repair to fix the problem, the problem continues. This makes the advantage of having a 300 mm zoom in such a tiny body often unusable until the photo moment is long past. Sad about that

Loved and hated it

I have purchased this camera twice. The first time I wanted a compact point and shoot to use when I didn't want to carry my dslr. I was able to take great pictures on vacation (well until the extremely short battery ran out and I did not have a backup yet). Then, I dropped it in the sand and got sand in the lens. I decided to buy a new one, and I have had a horrible time with it. At almost every setting, bright, regular, and low light settings, my pictures have come out completely overexposed. I have changed settings, got the pictures to turn out for a couple of shots only to have the next ones become overexposed. It has been completely frustrating. Planning to send it back and reconsider what to do next.
Pros: Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Short battery life
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
