Somewhat disappointed but works ok

I bought this cooktop about a month ago and was excited to give it a go!
First, let me say, I love the look of the cooktop (except the height of the grates) and I love the fact that it's a five burner. I wanted the controls in the front and I really liked how GE (and other manufacturers make it, too) placed the front two burners, using as much of the footprint as possible, instead of a straight front surface, which would use less cooking surface area. This design allows for more grill coverage. Now, will I end up using all five burners in any given time? I hope so and I hope it's not "big pots" that they won't all fit over the burners.
As my handyman was installing, we noticed the opening was a bit bigger than I would have liked because there was 5/8" gap in the depth and 1/2" gap in the width area. I had an electric glass cooktop (did love the cleaning aspect of it) that had a straight corner cut out on my granite when granite was installed 9 years ago. This cooktop has a "rounded" corners so in order to cover the straight 90 degree angles on either sides of the cutout, we had to pull the cooktop all the way to the front, leaving 5/8" gap in the very back, allowing food/oil, etc. to fall onto the top of my oven (which is just below it, also GE model PT925SNSS) and even with that, it BARELY covered the corners of the cutout! Now, I'm needing to have some sort of a long piece of "something" to cover the gap in the back that this cooktop doesn't cover, ugh!
However, that's not my biggest problem. Now that I have had first hand experience with using this cooktop, as with other reviews, I have to complain about the height of the grates. why are the grates positioned so high up above the flames??? The heat really does seem to escape because your pot/pan is positioned higher than the other gas cooktops I've seen and used. Also, if you don't have a large enough pot/pan covering the burner, you're sure to have very hot handles because the heat from the flames will escape out of the sides of the burners and heat the handles up so that you can't touch them without using some potholders. I already had low clearance when I cooked in my flat glass cooktop because my over the range microwave sat further down from the cupboard than it should have, by code, so now, my clearance is lost by about another 2.5 inches. I decided to go with this model, despite the loss of clearance because I know we'll replace the cabinets in the future. And I intend to raise those stupidly low cupboard above the cooktop by six inches or just have a range hood above it.
I use a lot of very small pots and the only burner that's small enough to use efficiently is the middle (the triple flame burner) and use the middle smallest burner. Is that crazy or what?!?!?! If I want to use the smallest burner and a triple flame burner, I obviously can't. The other two "smaller" burners are still not small enough to use with my small pots.
The reviews about "taking longer to boil" is really true. I was skeptical when I read reviews about how slow it boiled but you know what, it's really true. I was surprised at how slow it did boil. My guess is it's because part of the heat is lost due to the height of the grates.
After having used it only a couple of weeks I'm finding the position of the two smaller and two larger burner positioning to be weird. Why didn't GE place one smaller burner in the opposite side of the other smaller burner so we can use one smaller and one larger, instead of both in the front or both in the back? That, honestly, didn't make any sense to me.
Also, the knob that controls the griddle controls both burners at the same time so you can't adjust one burner at a time. GE, did you think about the fact that we, as consumers, might want to have one burner to use as a "warmer" plate and the other burner as the "cooking" plate??? Obviously not!!!
Lastly, and this, frankly, is astounding to me. Why did you not make the control knobs removable????????????? Has your QM department not tested this model before it was sent to manufacturing? Hasn't anyone at GE ever cleaned gas cooktop knobs??? Do you know how much more convenient it is to clean your cooktop when your knobs are removable? And why are the knobs not metal? They are cheap hard plastic material that's made to look like metal finish. I hope they don't break on my like some of the reviews mentioned.
That's all I have to say. If GE is reading my review, I would be very interested in speaking to someone to discuss these concerns so you can implement them in your next model. Thank you!

CONTINUALLY BURN MYSELF GRATES TO HIGH FROM THE FLAME LARGE BURNERS ARE BOTH IN THE FRONT SO IF YOU HAVE 2 LARGE PANS GOING AT SAME TIME HARD TO ACCESS THE PLASTIC KNOBS THAT BREAK WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF TO CLEAN AND PUT BACK ON

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to write your review on your new gas cooktop. We regret any inconvenience and we are happy to help. Although the other burners are designed to bring water and other liquids to a boil, the center burner offers 20,000 BTU’s of power, providing you with the fastest heating results. The left front and right front burners offer 9,100 BTU’s and the right rear burner is rated at 5,000 BTU’s.
The type of cookware being used can also affect the cooking speed. Please take a look at page 6 in the use and care guide for additional details, found in our following link:
Cleaning advice can also be found in the above link, beginning on page 9.
We hope this helps. Thank you, again, for your feedback.

Super disappointed, I have had nothing but trouble with the knobs. They stick and I'm afraid if I turn it too hard they will break, thought that the cafe would be a better brand,

Takes forever to boil and burners too close togeth

We just built our house and we upgraded to this Cafe model. We are super disappointed with it! It takes at least 20-30 minutes to get the water to boil and you can only cook using one side at a time because the burners are way too close together on the 30". Trying to convince builder to replace with something better

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to write your review on your gas cooktop. This is not the evaluation we would expect to hear and we regret your experience. We would also like to offer a tip. The middle burner is the Power Boil unit and is rated at 20,000 BTU’s. This is the best burner to use to quickly bring things to a boil and is best equipped for large cookware. We appreciate your feedback and hope you find our suggestion helpful.

Excellent cooktop

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] superb cooking performance- the high heating center burner sears meats and handles stir frys with ease. Water boils quickly and even when cold items are added, comes up to boil again quickly. Side griddle is an amazing bonus - like bringing in your outside BBQ grill. Drawback features are very heavy grates (to lift off for cleaning), no included vent so we had to have a custom one put in and I just think the grates should be a half inch lower to have less heat escape. Not sure why the grates need to be so high. These are just cosmetic though - cannot fault the performance at all and it is very easy to clean. Still looks sparkling and stylish even after 3 months of heavy use.
I would recommend this to a friend!
