A great intermediate camera with a ton of features

This is one of my favorite cameras, It feels good holding it in your hands. It is a worthy upgrade from a SX10 SX30 SX110 And it takes a picture as good as my S100 - G11 coming from a point and shoot world never using raw,I am sure a advanced user could get a better picture from S100 - G11 but I am getting good quality photos without a lot of hassle using auto & P mode with the SX40.
Very good image quality, good auto white balance, user-friendly design make the SX40 difficult to exceed in a single-lens camera unless you go to the canon G1X.. I was also very pleased with its image stabilization. The SX40 isn't perfect, but no camera is. The most improvement is lower noise even at 200iso and up in my test, with all my cameras except the S100, that said my canon G1X is the best here but it has that huge sensor in it.
I am using a 8gb extreme pro sandisk card, I know it is a little over kill here. Note if taking alot of movies get a spare card just in case... The canon speedlite 270EX works great with this cameras hot shoe, I would highly recommend getting one when you can afford it...
I mostly take pictures of bear in the Smokey Mountians (CADES COVE) and love chaseing the grand kids around taking their pictures.
Pros: great vacation camera
Cons: no camera is perfect

Simply put, WOW..the camera takes amazing pics, and has many features that higher end cameras have. The zoom is awesome, especially when you set it on a tripod, I was pleasantly pleased! What fun it was to look at something up close, when I couldn't physically get close, like the moon lol Oh, and the speed between each shot is perfect, especially when you don't want to miss those goofy kids and pets moment, speed and clear shots are very important! Lastly, to assure your photos are perfect, and able to use all the camera's features, with out blur or excessive noise, get a class 10 memory card, not a class 4. You'll be much happier. Have fun!
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, fast, excellent zoom

I had accepted the fact that I was going to spend over a grand to get a new DSLR with lenses, and I was not happy about it. I came across the SX 40 by accident, but after reading the features/reviews, it had exactly what I was looking for all along (speed burst, latest sensor, super zoom, 1080p at 24fps, and manual controls)for less than half of what a new DSLR set up would cost. I'm not starting a photog business - I'm just growin' some kids. I figure I could buy this "tweener" to see if I really liked photography - and upgrade to a DSLR later if my passion bloomed. My first test shot indoors on Auto was just beautiful. The 35X zoom is, in a word, Unbelieveable! On my first day of shooting (yesterday) I was using the Tv mode to blur my kids arms for a butterfly effect (plan to do some 'light painting' today), shooting super slow motion dog runs, and taking smooth close-ups in Av mode. I have zero photography experience beyond point and click up until this point. All I can say now is - who needs DSLR? The SX 40 has everything a family on a budget needs without all the lens changes. I'm very pleased...
Pros: no lens changes, image stabilizer, good price, manual controls, speed burst, slow motion
Cons: 2.8 is biggest aperture

Can't believe my eyes!!!

Just gave a family member my trusty SX30 IS because I replaced it with this marvelous SX40 HS. Less than 2 weeks in my hands and ... I can't believe my eyes!!!
This has to be the perfect fixed-lens P-n-S camera! In any mode, shooting stills or video, the images and files are jaw-dropping and astounding in every respect.
As a long-time PowerShot owner, the controls are familar and all settings are easy to set and adjust. Modern security inspections make dragging your best dSLRs thru airports a real pain ... but not to worry that you can't get those eye-popping vacation shots. Take an SX40 HS for a good test shooting at your favorite camera store and you'll be impressed!!!
Pros: everything!

Best Ever Camera

I echo all the Pros that the other reviewers have posted and say that this is a fantastic all purpose camera. I do think that Canon should have furnished the small hard copy manual. My solution was: I took the disk and had my local printing shop to print the 220 pages(both sides), cut the 4" x 6" pages, install the manual in plastic laminated covers with wire coiled binder. I had first downloaded the manual from Canon's web page, but found that every page had a watermark (COPY). I guess Canon was afraid someone would copy this manual and sell it. I now have the entire manual (4" x 6" x 1/2") that will fit into my camera bag that is printed on better paper than Canon's Getting Started Guide that was furnished and is very professional looking.
Pros: everything
Cons: no hard copy manual

Excellent value for the price

I purchased the Canon SX40 HS two weeks ago, and have been using it extensively, under various light conditions, and temperatures. I can not be more thrilled with the performance so far. The zoom is amazing, and the features are excellent. After having lugged around bags of equipment for my other cameras for years, this is a real treat. It is lightweight, and easy to use. The only additional items I have purchased for it was a small tripod, and a padded camera bag. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants a great camera at a reasonable price.

Great Camera

Was looking for a camera of this type so read all the reviews of the different ones, went around to the stores and got the hands on feel of all those in it's class. One thing that stood out about the SX40 was image quality and the long zoom and that was exactly what I was looking for so purchased it on 24 Dec 2011 and I sure haven't been disappointed, have taken many photos in many conditions, low light, full sun and all ranges of the zoom and also micro, you cannot beat the image quality with any camera in it's class. We have attached the camera to a 58" HD tv via HDMI cable and it is amazing the detail and the color is right on the money and the video's are also great. If your looking for detail in pictures even at 35X times this is your camera!
Pros: image quality
Cons: none so far
