Almost a perfect printer

One thing...ONE...stops this from being a 5-star review, and it is so major it almost made this a 3-star review. I love this printer. Easy to use, easy to set up. However, it is all but impossible to print envelopes, and certainly isn't an easy process. Basically, you have a paper tray. You want to print an envelope? Remove tray, remove paper, insert envelope(s), readjust paper guides, insert tray. Done now? Remove tray, remove any unused envelope(s), readjust paper guides, insert paper, insert tray. Setting up a mass mailing and need to print to 200 envelopes? Convenient! (Oh wait...you're not supposed to load more than 5 at a time, so you can't even do THAT!) Need to print one or two envelopes? Not happening. So you might be thinking oh, that's fine. I'll just get the additional tray. Sorry, the additional tray only holds regular paper...and isn't it insane to have an entire tray of envelopes if you just need to print a couple a month? Factor in the 5 envelope limit and you have tray 2 filled with paper, and a great big empty tray with 5 envelopes.
Other than this huge glaring error that should have been caught very early in the design stage and NEVER have made it all the way into the finished product, this is a really good printer.

Great but issues with FiOS Router

Great all-in-one. Using in our small business. Speed and quality are great. Only issue was that it was not recognized by the FiOS router. This required FiOS tech support. FiOS said that it was a common issue. This should be listed by HP as a possible issue.

"Green" features frustrate user

Once this networked printer goes to "sleep", you have to manually turn it back on by cycling the power button. Previous HP networked inkjet printers I have owned "wake up" when you send a print job, but the HP OfficeJet 8600 does not. It is very inconvenient to have to go to the printer and cycle the power button in order to print. Additionally, there is no feature to turn off the automatic sleep. HP needs to provide a firmware patch to address this problem.

Setting this printer was like a dream, very easy to setup. However after only using 1 tray of paper, the feeder quit picking up the paper out of the tray (50 sheets).
I haven't owned the printer for even a month!

Great features, great performance. It just works

Cloud features are great - although I wish there was better explanation of how those work. I added a bunch of "subscriptions" without realizing that they will print automatically every day without realizing or told what the default settings were. Once you know, you will find it is easy to control those (setting up prescriptions should force the users to choose when the automatic printing should happen).
Printer is rock solid - performs well. quality of text and graphics is terrific. I have not tested photo printing yet. Setup including networking (wireless and wired) was a snap. I initially set it up using wireless and then switched over to using a wired interface - it worked without hiccups.
Overall, this is a great printer for a great price. I wish I had purchased it earlier...

I have over one million copies or prints on the 8500 unit. Far exceeding all expectations. In fact, I bought the 8500 to use as a temporary unit until I decided which laser printer to buy. After a short time, i realized the 8500 was much cheaper and faster than a new laser printer. I truly did not expect it to last long so I kept searching for a laser jet. After 100K copies or so, draft mode, 36 ppm, almost zero warm up time, I stopped looking for a laser jet. At approximately 1 million copies the print head started to streak just a little bit. Rather than buy a new print head I decided to buy the new 8600 unit and use the 8500 as a backup. Very pleased so far, thank you for deciding to continue (HP) printers an PC's. Brilliant move on one of Meg Whitmans first decisions. I'm now a true believer in pneumatic printing, crisp copies, fast, inexpensive and easy to use software. GO HP. Note to HP: feel free to correct spelling, edit or modify my post as needed. Oh, and feel free to send a pack of cartridges to me if you feel like it.
Cheers, good job,
Proken

Home office champ

I upgraded to this AIO to replace a collection of HP units (one per user) ranging from several smaller AIO's to a wide-format deskjet that just took up too much space. None were network connectable and that limited use in our mixed XP - Win 7 environment.
PROs: The 8600 seemed easier to set up than the 8500 I installed for a friend a while back. The wired networking is great if you use the install disk on every system you want to have full functionality when you connect to the printer. Wireless has been fine for basic printing from traveling laptops. I have not tried e-print yet, although I was pleased when after sending a fax, I was advised I had tried to send color to a B&W receiving location, and the 8600 automatically adjusted for this. I was also suprised at how intuitive the touch screen seems to be. Also, wake up from sleep mode is fairly fast and quiet. The clanking and banging heard when lesser printers set up is not missed! Color accuracy on scans or copies is remarkably close, although image quality is what I call "soft focus" and far from photo printer quality, especially when using standard copy paper. Fine for charts and graphs.
CONs: Use an empty flash drive when scanning to a memory card. The printer will otherwise take the time to scan the drive and offer to print your pictures! If you use the flatbed area for scanning or copying, it is not obvious where to lift the ADF / lid and because some ADF units (including this one) open to the left to release paper jams, it would be better if there was a more obvious indication to lift from the center front to access the flatbed area. Finally, be sure to snug the ADF guides TIGHT against the side of your paper, or the paper may feed at a quite noticable angle - making your work look sloppy.

Excellent step forward for HP Inkjet
on December 17, 2011

After experiencing many of the "lower" end inkjet devices, I was impressed by the quality and feature set of this device. A very big improvement with an excellent price point. The initial set up was well documented and easy to perform. E-print functionality works well, except it is not compatible with .msn email, which was not obviously indicated (minor frustration at first, until I discovered the documentation). Slightly noisy, reasonable print speed, good color (acceptable for general photo prints, not what I would call "photo" quality), very reasonable cost per page (pleasently suprised). Overall, I would reccomend this device to home office users.
