Really a nice Camcorder

I've had my camcorder HFR200 for a few months now. Coming from an older HI8 camcorder this one is just wonderful. Love the fact I can use 2 memory cards. I'm just an average home user and for what I need this camcorder has everything I could possibly want to take and share family videos. The anti-shake feature is amazing. I was using the camcorder to take video of a drive through our town for a friend in England. Even in my older car there is hardly any shake at all in the finished video. I was astounded at this. I was just sure it would be unwatchable from shaking and such. The finished video is so smooth, makes it look like I was riding in some luxury car with a great suspension system :) It's light weight, it is very easy to use and carry around. I wouldn't trade it for anything. If you are looking for a professional camcorder then spend the money and get one designed for that but if you are just an average home user or even an amateur movie maker then I really think you will benefit from this camcorder. The features it has are mind boggling to say the least, it just does everything. One of the only cons I can even think of is what was stated before in another review. That is being unable to use a longer life battery but who knows in a couple of years Canon just may come out with a longer life battery that will slide right into this camcorder increasing it's battery use time. With electronics getting smaller and smaller it just may happen. The only other thing that my old HI8 had that this doesn't is an external light for inside or night shots. So far it hasn't seemed to matter as even indoors the video looks quite good. I guess I would just feel better if there was an external light already built in I could use if I felt I needed to. As for connecting to TVs and such I haven't done that. I have just taken out the memory card and plugged it into my card reader on my computer. Had no trouble at all with that. Windows 7 x64 found the card and imported videos all on it's own. I don't plan to use the software that came with the camcorder. I use something else for editing and burning to disk.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Accurate, Vivid Colors, Compact Design, excellent image quality, Ergonomic/comfortable to hold, easy to use, w7 x64 had no trouble importing video from sd card, seems well made.
Cons: no option to use longer life battery, no external built in light.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Vixia HF R200-does it all

This is my most favorite camcorder. Its my 4th camcorder. It has all the features that are building excellent-video's. I would suggest that this camcorder is really suited for a Tripod--its Auto-features are very sensative. Not having any shake-or-jitter really brings the Hi-def vdeo to fruition. The Ext. MIC feature allows that both..INT MIC and Ext. MIC can be used at the same time. Or each a single device. There is a MIC-mixer also. This is a great BUY-with professional features. In a Super-Light-weight design.
Pros: mic mxer, 20x zoom, dd sound
Cons: needs to use a tripod

video file output not standard
on July 19, 2013

worst camera Ive ever used, video output file is a unknown .mts file, useless to all video editing software programs, if you view spec sheet of product no where does it say it creates a .mts file, it actually states it use a more standard mp4 file, so to me its a lie. so now for me to do anything uesful with this movie file I have to spend a large amount of my time converting it from a .mts file to a standard mp4 or wmv file, plus the user interface on camera is terribly, very clumsy interface.
Pros: Great sound/audio, excellent image quality, Ergonomic/comfortable to hold
Cons: Difficult Computer Connectivity, Difficult to use
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

use this for some quick conference video coverage, a few short interviews, people at the podium in meetings, etc...I dislike that many of the important features (dual card slot) reset to their default modes after powering off....meaning you have to check all your settings for relay recording every time you use it, but I love the external mic capability and the audio level controls. also nice and light and good picture, decent sound!!
Pros: Easy Computer Connectivity, Accurate, Vivid Colors, Compact Design, excellent image quality, Good Software Compatibility, Easy TV Connectivity, easy to use
Cons: Short battery life

HF R200 would like larger battery
on February 12, 2012

In comparison to the HF M301, I do not like the fact that the HF R200 has a battery compartment, that does not allow larger batteries with a larger capacity to be used. I would prefer a battery that attaches to the back of the camera allowing a larger (in size and capacity) battery to be used. I also do not like the fact that scenes decorated during playback have to be converted to Standard Definition.
