This is not a top shelf or medical grade airfilter/purifier, but it us amazing how much "stuff" gets caught in the sticky side of the filter between changes. We own a large dog, who does not shed as he has hair rather than fur. But like all of us animals, we do produce some skin debris that gets into the houses air filtration system. Our air conditioner filter also collects a lot of dead skin cells, so we know they are both working. Our unit is the minimum size for our square footage, so it does run most of the time. In fact, I've never experienced any stoppage of the air movement due to clean air. It also does a good job on household odors.
One thing I have never done is clean off the "light bulb" that is in the airflow system that would shut the unit off it it could not have cleaned the air.

Definitely replace your filter. It lasts a long time so it’s easy to think you don’t need to so often but these are built well and do the job well. The fit enables them to filter the air completely but I recommend the 6 month replacement time frame. They filter a lot more you cannot vacuum off and that is trapped in the hepa part of the filter. Definitely worth it.

To be honest, I find that the filters are outrageously expensive. The Breathesmart appears to work well but not sure how to know that it is except for the filth in the filter. No obvious instructions as to suggested easy ways to clean the filter or how often.
