Disappointing Keyboard/Touchpad
on August 31, 2012

Okay, this is the second time I have to write this, so I will start with the reason I'm doing it over... the touch pad. It is WAY TO SENSITIVE. I have tried changing sensitivity on it but it's still way to touchy, it will somehow end up highlighting everything and before you realize it, poof, it's gone. It happened as I was writing this review the first time. I've lost many emails and other documentation due to this causing me to redo it. It will also bump curosr up as you are typing and you end up typing in the middle of other sentences. Also I find no scroll on this touchpad. My other dell I could slide my finger up or down the right side of pad and scroll page, this one, no.
Problem #2 is the keyboard. The backspace button is way to hard to use. It takes a good hit on it and you have to find the right place to hit it. Also the " and ' button is not working good, you hit it and it doesn't show up until you keep typing, if you are a slow typer you will hit it twice, then have two and have to backspace to get rid of one of them. It's very annoying.
I am a fast typer and these issues are very much a problem for me. So if you are needing something to work on, don't get this one.
Other than those 2 problems which are pretty big, I have not encountered any other problems. The things I have trouble with usually relate to the keyboard and touch pad.
I was so excited to get this computer as my other one was a Dell Inspiron also. It was starting to mess up as it is about 5 years old and I decided to go ahead and get a new one. Now I wish I'd have spent the money getting the other one worked on. I am VERY DISSAPPOINTED.
Pros: work and play
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Hello Dproctor,

Thank you for providing us with your experience with your Inspiron 15R (5520). Sorry to hear that you are not having a great out-of-box experience.

In regards to the Touchpad, I understand that you have already attempted to adjust the sensitivity settings to remedy your concerns. The sensitivity you are seeing may be due to the palm rejection sensitivity (or TouchGuard) setting being too high. If this was not one of the adjustments that you made previously, please try to adjust it in the Dell TouchPad application located under ‘Hardware & Sound’ in the Control Panel.

In regards to the keyboard, this is not a typical experience and it should not take extra force to get the keys working properly.

I would highly advise that you reach out to our experts on the Social Support Team so that they may look into this matter on your behalf. They will be able to assess, diagnose and resolve your concerns ASAP!

• You can reach out directly via the Dell Community Forums (http://dell.to/GY65Xz); the Support tab on Facebook (http://bit.ly/HlJ9LZ); or on Twitter - @DellCares (http://bit.ly/Hhh2SQ).

Touch Pad sensitivity
on August 14, 2012

Just bought this computer to replace my Dell xps M1530 laptop.
Pros:
- The startup/shutdown time is fast.
- The display is beautiful and looks even better on my 50" HDTV.
- Audio Quality is fantastic.
- Fan noise is quiet. Hardley able to hear it, if at all.
- multitasks well with absolute minimal delay.
- Sleek design
Cons:
- Touchpad is VERY sensitive. I type with lazy hands and the touchpad picks up everything! I adjusted the settings to as low as it would go and I still have trouble with it. There is a macro (Fn + F3) to disable the touchpad while typing but a real pain to do that every time I have to type.
- Doesn't recognize external monitor attached via hdmi out of comp to DVI in monitor. If you disable the graphics card and re-enable it, the laptop picks up the signal from the monitor.
- A little on the heavy side but I didn't buy this to be an ultrabook so it's expected.
Overall, this is a great laptop for games/multimedia projects and just about anything you could throw at it. Video editing is as smooth as could be! I recommend this laptop to anybody who want's a fast and reliable computer.
Pros: School, games, photo/video editting, web design
I would recommend this to a friend!

You can NOT go wrong with this laptop. This laptop, when equipped with Core i7, enables the user to go beyond the limits of certain desktops! I have had this laptop for almost a month, and I've had no problems and have enjoyed it thoroughly. Being able to run my games is just a bonus!
Pros: Travel, Video Editing, Gaming

Pros: never gets hot, very silent, classical look, no glossy effects on screen, good visibiliy even in sunny places...but..
Contra: ...very bad colours, contrast, brightnes adjustments - killing for the eyes. Pretty slow, frequently unresponsive keyboard. Very heavy but not a problem as I dont travel with it.
I am DELL user already for 13 years, loved them.
I arrived to Dell shop with an aim to buy DELL XPS laptop, but unfortunately I was convinced about 15R laptop as one of the best choices that I could ever have,i7 procesor, 8GB RAM, 1 TB, 2,1 Hz etc...but now a couple of weeks I am just unhappy for an expensive and absolutely unnecessary extras that I have while missing just simple things that I was dreaming about as a user who wants: esay use of programs, like movie making, adjustments, good visibility that doesnt bother my eyes, good sound quality, illuminated keyboard, ...
One of the great things that the laptop has is matte screen, while the colors and contrasts on screen are just killing for eyes. I lost my last hope to adjust them more or less in adequate combination and brightness so that I would be able to keep my eyes on screen for more than 20 minutes. I know how to manage these things but still no results.
Always problems with text: while one part of the letters are huge, another ones are invisible even under lupa. A lot of times words are dissapearing partially or covering each other. first days they were completely ¨in fog¨ Struugling with this problem for quite a long, so no wish to open my laptop any more, it makes me feel that I have got wrong eyes and unable to do things that I easily could do for many years.
Conclusion:
One has to listen to his own NEEDS and wishes and to buy something that he/she dreamt about and NOT to listen just expert advices and wows!! about the great capacities computer has. As a middle average use I dont care about superprocessor, HDD 1TB memory that I ll never use, as well as another IT heartbreaking extras. Its definately is good laptop who needs all those qualities. I am not able to adjust it for my basic needs (never had this problem with another DELLs)
As a musician I d prefer XPS laptop which has a great JBL sound, 15R is quite good but still very far away from that with is tiny sound.
Basically good laptop which appeared to be unsuccessful choice in my own case as it doesnt correspond to my needs. About my previous DELLs I was much happier.
Pros: movie making editing, home use entertainment, listening music
I would recommend this to a friend!

Hello Kalna,

Sounds like you think the Inspiron 15R (5520) is a great system for the general user, just not for your needs. I am sorry to hear it is not working out for you, the way you hoped. We appreciate our long time Dell customers. The XPS screen is more vivid, and the contrast is sharp, but the higher end screens also come with the glossy finish. The matte on the matte finish tends to dither edges and obscure true colors. The downfall is it has a reflective screen and is not as easy to view outside in natural light. Most people focus on their own image instead of the screen, until they get used to it.

I noticed you are in Latin Americas. I would suggest you reach out to @DellAyuda on Twitter and see what they can do regarding your issue. You never know, the experts there may be able to assist!

Outstanding with one Caviat

Ordered this for a friend who was using a 7 year old dinosaur. Was really excited to show her the difference. Performance is unbelievable at this price point. I upgraded to the i7 processor. Windows 7 Performance scores were 7.5 for processing, 7.8(highest I have seen) for memory, and 6.5 for both graphics scores which is amazing for an onboard graphics chip. Intel FINALLY has an onboard chip that I could live with. I think the looks are sleek. I have a Studio XPS 1640 for my own and that is the slickest I have ever seen, but for about half the price, this looks REALLY good, not cheap at all.
XPS systems look great, but are almost twice as much and I have seen a lot of reports of wifi issues. No issues with this one at all, connects great and no degradation of speed with a decent router. Also keyboard feels great, very impressed Dell.
This would have been a 5 star rating hands down if not for this...
The only downside is the lack of a backlit keyboard. Which I have only owned 1 computer in my life with that(The Studio XPS) and although it's neet, certainly not necessary except in this situation. Dell uses the same keyboard on the Inspiron 15R as they do on the special edition(which has the backlit keyboard). That creates a problem because the keys are semi opaque to let the light shine through. Which is great IF you have the light enabled on the keyboard. Since this model doesn't have the light on, the keys are kind of dark, and in the first night I was setting up the system I noticed it was a little strain to see the letters on the keyboard. Since this is a computer she plans to keep for many years that will be a constant irritation.
So bottom line you need to get the backlit keyboard unless you want to strain in anything but a really brightly lit room. I wish Dell would either just allow you to upgrade for $50 or make the keyboards on this model with regular bright white stamped keys. So I am returning the system and dropping an extra $250 because to get the backlit keyboard I have to step up to the special edition and if I want the i7 Processor I have to also get the Full HD screen and Video Card.
Pros: home office use

Fan running constantly
on November 18, 2012
Posted by: stardust612
I just bought this computer yesterday. First I was so happy with this product. But then when I start using it for installing necessary programs bunch of other stuff, cpu fan is running constantly while cpu usage just about 2 to 8% and temperature of it 45 to 50 degrees. There no dust problem on vent. I tried to fix it updating bios and doing other things that says fixing this kind problem on the internet. Nothing works. I'm so disappointed with this laptop because of this problem.

Hello stardust612,

Thank you for contributing your review on the Inspiron 15R 5520 laptop. We regret to hear that your out-of-box experience has not been a positive one. It sounds like you have run a number of quick checks to resolve the concerns you are having with your fan constantly running, but have not reached a resolution. Another suggestion would be to ensure that you have your laptop properly ventilated to not cause obstruction with the airflow.

Pretty Great

This is a pretty great laptop. I looked at many different laptops on dell and elsewhere and I honestly couldn't find a better deal than this one. This laptop has been able to handle everything that I have thrown at it.
Pros:
-3rd gen intel processor.
-6 gigs of 1600mhz ddr3 ram.
-Extremely bright screen.
-(4) USB 3.0 ports.
-The fan is pretty much silent, even when doing video editing.
-Decent battery life ( I average about 4 hours)
-Nice design for the price.
Cons:
-This thing gets hot...like ridiculously hot. My only guess is that my fan is silent (mentioned above) because it isn't working correctly, and this is causing it to get extremely hot.
-No option for a back-lit keyboard ( I would have gladly paid more money for one).
-Speaking of keyboards, this isn't the best Dell keyboard. They keyboard lacks the feedback that I am used to with my Dell Inspiron 1545.
In all I am definitely satisfied with my purchase and I would recommend this product.
Pros: School, entertainment, light gaming
I would recommend this to a friend!

Second system purchased

This is the second system we purchased. It was given as a gift for a senior and I set the computer up. Unit is very nice and it was fairly easy for myself to get operational. For a person with limited knowledge I can see it being a difficult and frustrating experience.
Customer service handled the order well and shipping was painless.
Our first system is now 1 1/2 years working with no problems. I hope this one is the same.
Pros: home - personal
