Easing the burden
on February 14, 2014

As with all tax prep programs, one begins by blaming the program for one's own mistakes. TurboTax is better than most at diagnosing outright idiocy but no better than others at pinning down exactly why a particular problem is occuring. At the review stage, it would be helpful if a request for further information specified why the information was being sought. I could not file because of missing information on box 17 of a 1020-S K-1. There was no information to be provided, I believed, until I reran the K-1 instructions and discovered I had mistakenly entered that the corporation had closed in 2013. In the review stage, had the program indicated that additonal information was needed because of this entry I could have identified the error much more quickly!
Despite this, I would not attempt my tax return without TurboTax. A splendid product.
What's great about it: Rigorous and complete process
What's not so great: Long waits for some forms e.g. K-1 wksht

Software Flaws
on February 14, 2014

I have used Turbo Tax every year since 1980 something. I experienced two three software guidance errors this year. One was in a question about my grandson's social security. I answered yes to a question that needed that answer and got in an endless software loop. I had to answer no to get out. It didn't seem to have an impact on the return accuracy.
Another was that I visited many questions that didn't apply just to get a $0 shown in 2013 column comparing the 2012. I entered a $0 in some question about Movie Industry income or something and the error check showed a special situation and wouldn't allow efiling. Took an hour to find where that entry was made. Deleting the 0 fixed the problem.
I finished the first pass of my return before Schedule D was available. After D was available, I did the update and went through the questions to update to the new Schedule D. Okay, that should have been the end of it right, No. Every time I passed through that question checking my return, it asked if I wanted to work on D now?
There were other things that I don't remember now, but my impression was that you must of had some good software engineers retire and the new ones aren't up to speed yet. This years software is flaky.

Every Year It Gets the Job Done!

When I first moved to another state several years ago, my thought process was taxes were going to be too hard to do on my own. So I went to have them done, no CPA and they missed several areas. They did not know me more than I know myself. Plus the amount you have to pay them is 4 times as much as Turbo Tax. Never do that again. It will be Turbo Tax and nothing else.
What's great about it: Questions are easy to answer, do not have to think hard about it.
What's not so great: None

Excellent Tax software to easily file your taxes and get all of the write-offs. Would not use any other software or pay again to have somebody else do my taxes. No issues.

2013 Refund
on February 14, 2014

I have been using Turbo Tax for about 15 years and have been thrilled to use it. Unfortunately, this year I tried to use a feature of retrieving a prior year (2012) and it wasn't available (my computer which had this file on it died before I backed it up). In fact I found NONE of my Tax returns were available. Weird. This, however, will NOT stop me from continuing to use this wonderful and self explanatory software in the future.
What's great about it: Has always - detailed and easy to use
What's not so great: For some reason I could not find my previously submitted taxes in the vault.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
