My Experience
on October 15, 2014
Posted by: Bo4500
My son is an alcoholic and has been unable to support himself, wife and son. We supported him and his family all year. TurboTax would only permit me to claim two of them as dependents. I did not see a way to override this, so I will have to amend my return outside of TT.
What's great about it: Easy to complete return, but see below.
What's not so great: Would not let me claim my son, wife and grandson as dependents even though we supported them the entire year.

Really covered all the bases about making sure I got every deduction except for a home based business.
What's great about it: Very Thorough with everything else.
What's not so great: Didnt asked enough about a small home based business.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

There is no other product that I would trust to perform this grueling task. The organization, simplification, and elimination of clutter makes the process bearable and efficient! Keep the improvements coming!
What's great about it: Import of Brokerage Statements
What's not so great: Occasional button hang-up
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Great package, but needs work on Foreign income
on October 15, 2014

Love TurboTax and have used it for years. Always easy to do the standard sections. A quick running snapshot on the toolbar would be nice, like I've seen in the Canadian version but otherwise all is fine. Unless you have foreign accounts, income or property. Our Canadian income and property - the forms required by the IRS are NOT user friendly when you try to complete them in TurboTax. I got so confused this year I threatened my beloved laptop with sudden death. I've been doing the US-Canadian forms for the last 7 years, but I guess IRS has gotten worse. TurboTax could go a long way towards making it easier for us.
What's great about it: Easy to use in common areas
What's not so great: Frustrating and unclear for more complex areas

Liked improved overall navigation and streamlined ability to import investment information. Get a little bored with interviews but applaud thoroughness it elicits. Overall, very good experience.
What's great about it: Comprehensive
What's not so great: Little cumbersome wading through interviews

What would I do without TurboTax?!
on October 15, 2014

I have used TurboTax for our tax preparation for over 20 years. My husband is a pastor, I have a part-time home-based business, and we both now are over age 65. Thus we have a somewhat complex combination of clergy housing, business income and expenses, social security, health savings accounts, etc., to calculate. TurboTax walks me through every step. I purchase the Deluxe version and have been VERY impressed with online responses to questions on those sections where instructions were incomplete or confusing.
What's great about it: Imports data from last year; instructions easy to follow
What's not so great: Instructions in a few sections were incomplete or confusing

Got Max Refund
on October 15, 2014

It takes more time than people think, and it helps tremendously to have everything organized before beginning. It is accurate and gets the maximum refund possible or the most accurate amount owed. Being able to e-file is terrific, though the state fee is getting too high. For those of us who have done taxes for many years, the interview method is too slow and increases the likelihood you miss something by not reading carefully enough. For a beginner, the interview helps. The File Menu (forms view) no longer has an item to switch between federal and state. Should be put back on the menu. The only way to get to my state was to switch to Interview. Could then switch back to Forms view to finish the state. Have used TurboTax Deluxe for many years and have it set on auto-renewal.
What's great about it: Like that it allows form view and provides help at all stages and that there is help from online community and TurboTax.
What's not so great: Has gotten more complicated and some helpful menu items removed. Have to use interview to find some things.

unable to e-file after rejection for PIN
on October 15, 2014

no warning that if you had to paper file the next year you have to use "0" for AGI rather than actual amount - this got me rejected and send around in circles . needs fixing badly - gives ultimate frustration and evokes anger
What's great about it: gives info to do correction but won't let you get to edit
What's not so great: simply sendss you in circles; don't know if you corrected anything until second reject notice
