The software requires the user to completely fill out sections before advising that the section does not apply. For example, I was required to fill out all sections of the tuition credit section before the program advised that I earned too much income to be eligible. This should have happened at the outset since my income was known to exceed eligibility requirements.
What's great about it: generally very easy to follow and clear.
What's not so great: does not exclude inapplicable deductions

Best low price option for CPAs and non-CPAs
on October 13, 2014

Overall, this software did everything I needed it to do, at a reasonable price, with minimal frustrations. My biggest frustration is how many things I have to click just to make one minor change. There should be a way to make a slight change to my state tax return without having to answer every single question in the state tax return screens. As a CPA, I'm used to tax preparation software where only one or two clicks allows me to make minor changes. I also don't appreciate how the software asks me to upgrade so many times, as it is very easy to accidentally click to upgrade. (I learned that the hard way in a previous year when I used TurboTax to prepare my taxes.) However, I tried other less expensive software in 2012, and found it was even more frustrating than TurboTax because it did not handle the tax situation I had. My final frustration is that there is no way to check the "Have you filed an extension" box on the AR1000F, page one form. I had to manually check it after I printed the form. Overall, I still would recommend TurboTax over other low cost options.
What's great about it: Manages many different tax situations
What's not so great: Too many steps to make one minor change
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Constructive Criticism - Turbotax Deluxe - 2013
on October 13, 2014
Posted by: Richard3355997
I know Turbo tax is an extremely complicated piece of software, and it's easy to criticize. But, in the spirit of constructive criticism, I had 2 issues I think the Turbo Tax team should be aware of:
1 - Problems with Form 1116 - Foreign Tax Credit, identified by many users in early 2013 - based on web search - still had not been fixed via updates by October, 2013. Not sure how that could be. The software error in 1116 cascaded further errors in Forms 8863 and 1040 and caused a lot of grief, until I stumbled on how to override the error.
2 - Turbo Tax does a pretty good job of explaining where their numbers come from, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I ended up spending many hours trying to figure out where some of the TT-generated numbers were coming from and why..
For improvement of the product, for those of us that only use the product once per year, I'd suggest including a section, on the CD and in the download, that is just about how to use the software, especially the "Forms Mode", as well as being sure there is an easy way to track back or get an explanation for hopefully all TT generated numbers, but at least more of those that would be less obvious to the yearly user.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax is way better than doing it all by hand like I used to do
What's not so great: Software error in Form 1116 cuased alot of grief

Schedule D And attachments
on October 13, 2014
Posted by: hotstox
When box is checked that says you are sending supporting schedules and there is no way to attach them, that's a problem.
Most brokerages allow download to excel. Allow input to Schedule D (via worksheets) using data from excel. Allow mapping from brokerage format to turbotax
What's great about it: It works
What's not so great: Difficult data entry for stocks/bonds. No way to attach copies of supporting docs

great program for basic to semi-complex returns
on October 13, 2014
Posted by: plopshop
As a CPA, I found this to be a very good program that is as good as the far more expensive programs that CPA firms use. Taxes are getting so complex that even CPA's have to double/triple check for accuracy.
What's great about it: simpe to use
What's not so great: a bit clumsy for CPA's that know what needs to be changed
Pros: I bought or sold investments
