Been using this program for my personal taxes for years. I like the fact that I can imput the info myself without having a $$ accountant or bookkeeper type doing it for me. I want to make sure that I'm in control of the imput. Accountants can and do make mistakes and I wouldn't want to have that hanging over my head in case of an audit.
What's great about it: step by step instructions and explanations of deductions etc.
What's not so great: wish it autofilled some items that don't change

Even the best isn't easy to work with

It's the next best program to getting an accountant but it still requires considerable work and deciphering to figure out where the various numbers go into TT and what TT does with them. Trying to track a number back or forward through more than one jump is sometimes not possible since it is often only the next closest step rather than the whole chain of how it is carried. I had to use the Forms view a lot to figure out where some of the flagged and most of the unflagged problems came from.
TT 2013 had a number of annoyances such as numbers marked as estimated that couldn't be unmarked and no explanation provided, blank ghost Corp S K-1 forms that would be created even after being deleted, confusion on what to do with state K-1 numbers which sometimes use different terminologies, a few boxes that needed checking but weren't flagged, some numbers that failed to flow from Federal to State, lack of flow interactivity between state returns, and a weak handling of foreign tax credits/deduction.
There is more than 1 place to enter LTC and health insurance expense, but there is no guard against using both which results in double counting.
I was glad to see double taxation credit CA Form S included this year, esp. since the OR credit is not available to individuals. Supposedly S had existed since 2009, but I don't recall seeing it or being asked about it by TT until 2013. That's unfortunate because you can file for the credit for state double taxes paid only up to 1 year ago. It needs info flow from the State returns. It would be helpful if Federal asked which state certain non W-2 income came from. That would make flows to various State returns a lot easier.
Free PIN for the Federal e-File cannot be received in seconds as TT indicates. Website requires certain info and is not available 24x7. The dial-in number to do this is available only on regular working hours and workdays. That surprised me, given that it was a computer interface that takes all the info for verification.
Significant TT program updates are released prior to and also well after the 15Apr deadline. Makes more sense to take an extension and wait until Sept. to file.
Nevertheless, it would be foolish to try to file 1040 long form without the help of a software program like TT. It had all the forms I needed, kept them all in one place, and prevented stupid math errors that tend to creep in.
I might be carping a bit in my comments, but really, TT still has the edge for D-I-Y taxes. IMHO, there are too many flavors of TT. Also, even though the States all cost the same, the quality and coverage is quite variable from State to State. OR should be half the cost of CA.
It would be nice to be able to open >1 return at a time. It's cumbersome to have to flip back and forth between them and then try to return to the same pages.
I would like more consumer testing of TT before it is released t the public. That would help eliminate the bugs and weaknesses that make TT a lot less efficient than it should be. Please don't waste effort creating a whole new interface unless it is a considerable improvement in human factors interface engineering. Fancy graphics and videos don't help much; good explanations and rationales do.
Check out the TT Answers Forum. If you're having a problem with TT, chances are good that someone else is too, and sometimes there are super solutions by the users. TT staff monitors a few of the problems, but there are way too few of them participating.
What's great about it: Does the math, has the forms, nice printing
What's not so great: Sometimes deficient in support for State, K-1s
Pros: I bought or sold investments

One of the most common things people do is file an extension. They usually send some money with it. For years TT has sent me in crazy circles looking for where to enter the money I sent. Starting with the next edition, provide a place on a main streen where you can enter what you sent. As it is, you have to guess that it might be an estimated tax, even though you know you did not send in estimated quarterly taxes, and then you have to scroll down to find there is actually an extension section. This is WRONG,. Put it right out front, not in a sub menu!
The other problem I have is going around in circles and circles every time you want to back up or want to see what something is,. You could get done in a quarter of the time if that did not happen. You don't dare choose the "guide me" navigation, and even the "do it myself" navigation does this to some extent.
These two things alone mean I spend hours doing what should take me 15 minutes if I have all my stuff together,
What's great about it: Gets the taxes done
What's not so great: Sometimes you go in circles, and hard to find where to list things
