BLEW MY FOREIGN TAX CREDITS
on September 22, 2014
Posted by: SCHL
FILLED OUT MY 2012 TAX RETURN WITH ALL THE DATA NECESSARY FOR MY 1116. APPARENTLY IT DECIDED SOMETHING WAS MISSING OR INCORRECT AND CHANGED A CREDIT TO A DEDUCTION , WITHOUT WARNING. THE DEDUCTION THEN DISAPPEARED WITH THE AMT. DIDN'T REALIZE IT UNTIL THE NEXT YEAR.
What's great about it: GENERAL GOOD, BUT BLEW MY TAX CREDITS AFTER I PUT THE INFORMATION IN
What's not so great: IT MAY CHANGE THINGS TO YOUR DISADVANTAGE WITHOUT GIVING YOU A WARNING

Disappointed this year
on September 22, 2014

I have used Turbo Tax for years and found it to be an excellent product. However, this year I could not get my info to import from the ItsDeductible website. I called and spoke to a rep and she could not help either. I used the "help" section and from the amount of questions there, I can tell I am not the only person having this problem. I hope this is fixed for 2014 or I'll be looking for a different company.
What's great about it: importing financial info, walk-thru format
What's not so great: couldn't import from Its Deductible

Turbo Tax is much harder to use than in 2012

2013 was much harder to find needed forms that I had not used last year and it was harder to find forms that I had completed but needed to change.
Turbo Tax 2012 was much easier to use. 2013 was very user unfriendly and very aggregating.
Your programmers know how to get around the program after working on it for a year, but DO remember, we only use it once a year. It should be much easier to use.
Whoever came us with a better ideas for 2013 failed horrible.
What's great about it: It completed it's objective
What's not so great: Much more user unfriendly.

This is a quick, worry-free, accurate way to prepare my taxes. Thank you for making a great product.
Only negative this year--somehow, I couldn't find my 2012 Turbo Tax return (*.tax2012). I was told I could import some parts of the PDF of my return, but the instructions to do so were confusing, incomplete, and impossible to follow in the time I had. You have *got* to improve this if you want to keep your customers happy.
What's great about it: Got the job done very quickly.
What's not so great: I lost my 2012 Turbo Tax file--there was confusing and incomplete instructions for transferring in the PDF file I had ma

OK for Power Users

Our tax situation is highly complex due to good fortune. So far I'm able to avoid costly paid preparers because of Turbotax. It takes over a man-week, including subsidiary computations. Using a preparer would cut that down, some. But I'm a non-practicing CPA & have been a financial professional for many years before retiring, so I'm happy to trade the time for $$, so Turbotax fits my needs.
Package gets full marks for thoroughness in interview mode. There's almost nothing missing (except deduction for state & local utility taxes). To save time, it's best to work by applicable sub-sections only, though. Logical loop-backs (to fix errors & omissions) can be tedious & mechanical.
Specific Fixes Needed:
- Alpha sort previous year's charitable deductions to ensure none are missed this year, avoid duplicates, etc.
- Create ability to see major docs (1099's, K1's, etc) in 'paper view' for easier data entry & checking.
- Better explanations on obscure error messages: Some are baffling, even for me. OTOH, I guess you dare not say that some minor omissions will make no practical difference.
Bottom Line: Turbotax does a good job for a broad-market package that must accommodate a wide variety of user skills. It could be streamlined around the upper edges (of skill level), though. But complexity is unavoidable due to the ridiculous US Tax Code that they must deal with.
What's great about it: Extremely thorough data collection prompts. Excellent tax form integration
What's not so great: Extremely tedious data entry, esp. for K1's & donations
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I had a complicated return this year. While I feel confident we got it right without having to go to a CPA (Yay!!) It was difficult to file MFJ Federal and one state and MJS for another state. I
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Frustrated Refund
on September 23, 2014
Posted by: jnjburk91
Just when I thought my return was filed and on it's happy way I found an email in my inbox that it was rejected due to "Jackie's AGI" being incorrect. I could not have entered her 2012 AGI because the return is stuck on a computer that will no longer start up. Now I know that I should have gotten a PIN from the IRS for both of us but that was not very clear when I filed the return. My suggestion is to make that a little more bold an noticeable for next year. I would appreciate it.
What's great about it: Quick and easy.
What's not so great: Pins are a pain!
