Great tool, but needs work for foreign filers
on January 9, 2015
Posted by: bcscribe451
Used TT for a decade now, both onshore in the USA and offshore from Australia (as a US citizen). Would love to see more tools for folks like me filing from offshore, i.e., allow foreign credit cards (to pay for TT fees). Also, stronger advice for foreign filers would be great. The foreign tax credit section of deductions is very awkward and difficult to figure out. Still, great product. Wish they had a version for Australia.
What's great about it: Intuitive, quick
What's not so great: Still not geared toward foreign filers
Pros: I had a baby

State form has DO NOT FILE water mark
on February 9, 2014
Posted by: Dscott7932
FIrst glance looks like Turbo tax is holding me hostage because I don't want to pay to e- file state taxes. Forms are emblazoned with DO not File watermark. Can't find instructions for printing a clean copy. This is terrible.
What's not so great: No explanation of how to get clean copy of state forms for mailing

Turbotax Seems Lazy This Year
on December 30, 2014
Posted by: TaxPuma
I have been using TurboTax for years, but this may be my last. The program felt lazy, offering links to a forum search rather than providing information that it would have in the past.
I also really liked when the program pointed out parts that weren't common, but it rarely did that this year. The result was that I found myself scratching my head over stuff I hadn't even considered before, finally going out of my way to realize that this was an uncommon item.
TurboTax used to feel like a conversation with a professional that knew that you didn't know much about taxes, but this year it just laid out cryptic questions with little explanation. If I wanted to search forums for my tax questions I would have just done that rather than buying a program.
What's great about it: Interface is still mostly easy to use.
What's not so great: It seemed like the program did a lot less this year.

Helpful but could be better for foreign filers...
on December 24, 2014

On the whole, turbo tax is very helpful, but I have a few issues with using it as a foreign filer and a procrastinator. There are several places that require a US address or phone number, which makes it hard to complete forms accurately as an American filing from overseas. Also, I moved from one overseas location to another this year, and also changed employers at the same time. I did not see a way to add more than one foreign employer as a source of wages. Although it's helpful to have my answers to the questions fill in the forms for me, it would be useful to see the forms as they will look in the end, while we are still completing the questions. One place especially this is needed is at the end when doing the error check. It brings up a field needing correction, but does not show the whole form, so it can be difficult to ascertain what it pertains to and what the correct information should be.
What's great about it: Ease of use, lots of helpful explanations and directed questions.
What's not so great: Limitations when filing late, from abroad (some fields require US phone and address)
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

$013 Turbo Tax Review
on November 15, 2014
Posted by: Whydontuchoose
I've used Turbo Tax for many years for Fed & CO state returns and prefer to return to it each year. I usually "guide" myself through each section rather than use the "Turbo Tax Guide Me" process. I'm almost always able to find an explanation for confusing Federal tax issues in the internally linked "Explain" or "More info" provisions. It's very annoying that I cannot use the program's calculator in the " Add Supporting Details" boxes ... that tool should be made available in the next version. Sometimes the process of correcting mistakes found and presented for handling after the program performs its "review" is overly cumbersome and it seems to me that earlier versions of Turbo Tax were easier possibly providing better explanations of really just what is the issue and making it easier for the user to go to the initial/ original location or form where the incorrect entry was made. It seems as though this 2013 version did not return the user to the exact point where s/he may have suspended entries when restarting and returning to the program to continue working in Turbo Tax. Overall a very good tax preparation software for the experienced user.
What's great about it: comprehensive, easily followed, straight forward
What's not so great: can't use calculator in "supporting details" windows, lost supporting details when entering state sales tax amounts
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Never had a problem for many years

I've been using TurboTax for many years, for one, its a heck of a lot cheaper then then getting it done by a CPA/accountant or the other company's. Plus I know I'm not getting ripped off by unknown charges.
What's great about it: I like that this is on my computer where I can access when I need too
What's not so great: Can't think of any atm
