Too much marketing
on April 26, 2014
Posted by: FLIndivid
I have used TT Deluxe for many years and find it a great tool to simplify my tax filing. Easy to use and a lot of reference materials for any questions that might arise. Over the years the marketing has become heavy handed. Multiple suggestions to upgrade to Premier which I feel are unwarranted for my tax situation. The final straw is the repeated offering for state tax assistance for a Florida individual when the product acknowledges that no such return is required in Florida.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Intrusive marketing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

No refund, Paid

Turbo Tax is my go to software to do my taxes. I can do it myself, but it helps me and prints it out.
What's great about it: I like Turbo Tax. It is great with all the entries so that you can tell what to file.
What's not so great: None

Needed to Amend my return
on April 26, 2014
Posted by: COGATOR2
Amending, once I got in the correct section "Amend my return" was simple. I learned the hard way that you can't just open the data file you saved and make changes from there. Once I did this, there was no way to get the saved info into the "Amend my return" 1040X format. Won't repeat this mistake.
Otherwise, top marks as I had a complex return with many investment sales, a home purchase and a new rental property.
P.S. - If you're reasonably tax savvy, there is no need to upgrade to Premier or some other version. Deluxe will correctly handle investment transactions, self employed income and rental properties.
What's great about it: Made it easy and was straight forward
What's not so great: Goofed and didn't select "Amend my return". This was a bad move. There is no way TT can transfer the info.
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

Most Efficient Tax Program there is
on April 26, 2014
Posted by: Miley1825
I have used Turbo Tax since it's inception to file my taxes. I have always received the max refund and the professionals looking at my deductions etc., I have never had any issues. It's a great way to get your taxes done professionally without all the fees.
What's great about it: Ease of filing and "It's Deductible"
What's not so great: "None"
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Ok until it gets complex.

This year I had to deal with the calculation of the program when it was a Disposition of a car used for business. Help was very little help. I do not know where items are getting their information from, so I do not know how they were getting their numbers. It seemed that the only way to get any real help was to pay more for it. This was disappointing. Otherwise, the program worked fine.
What's great about it: Pull up previous years and do calculations for you.
What's not so great: When you need help on complex subjects, you are expected to pay more.

I never had a problem with a foreign tax credit before. It was aggravating to have to e-file twice because of a rejection. There are also way too many automatic updates throughout tax season. This increases the time required to launch Turbotax. Updates should be less frequent!
What's not so great: My e-file was initially rejected because of a "bug" with the foreign tax credit program

Fed and State Return Filing
on April 27, 2014

My only gripe is with the state filing process. It's a bit clunky. It should be made a little easier to file state taxes using e-file while filing federal taxes at an earlier date and by mail. You need an option upfront that tells Turbo Tax the user intends to work the two at different times...perhaps months or weeks apart, and that the user wants to file them differently. It can be done in Turbo Tax, but I found the whole thing a bit clunky because the default position is that you want to work both federal and state taxes together. There should be an upfront option turning off this default position. Instead you have to work your way through a lot of other things before you get to work them independently.
What's great about it: I like the way Turbo Tax pulls data across years and returns
What's not so great: The state filing process is clumsy and confusing.
