Love Turbotax

We've been using TT for over 10 years and every year we learn better ways to keep records. Every year we are impressed with our return and we are so happy to not be blindly trusting someone with our hard-earned money. I have no doubt we get the maximum deduction every year!!
What's great about it: Idiot Proof
What's not so great: Requires good record keeping

Thoughts on Turbo Tax
on April 20, 2014

I find the program very easy to navigate. One can simply let Turbo Tax take you through all the things it thinks you should consider or select on your own the things you want to address. Going back and forth this way makes doing my taxes very easy. I also like the ability to add supporting statements wherever necessary. This makes accounting very easy. The supporting statements can be easily edited, added to, or reconfigured. That's a real plus.
The con is that it is not available for Linux. There is no good reason for this.
What's great about it: It is very easy to switch between the "guided tour" and the "do it yourself" approach.
What's not so great: The primary con is that it is not available for Linux

TurboTax got us through three years of back taxes
on April 20, 2014

Overall, TurboTax has continued to improve the product and make it easier to use and more plain to follow. I noticed a couple areas of confusion, though.
First, with the American Opportunity credit, the "Help" feature stated that the "4 years" of eligibility meant until a Bachelor's degree equivalent was reached. However, the software and the forms broke off eligibility at four physical tax years. This should be clarified.
Second, when entering the 1099-B information for Capital Gains, the terminology for the "A" and "B" boxes (Covered or non-covered security, and Basis reported or not reported to the IRS) appeared to be backward. It was the opposite of the terminology on my 1099-B. Also, the download feature for 1099-B information from different institutions is woefully short on which institutions are included.
Overall, TurboTax continues to be an excellent product and is improved each year. I will continue to use it annually.
What's great about it: The question/interview method was VERY helpful and made things easier to follow
What's not so great: Schedule D (Capital Gains) was confusing
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have been using Turbo Tax for the past 15 years. Straight forward, easy to use and understand. Make sure you get the version appropriate to your situation... (if you sold stock, get the version that covers investments, etc.).
What's great about it: simple, clear instructions, audit defense
What's not so great: none

Not Happy

After more than 10 years of using TurboTax, I struggled this year to get the returns to print. Having no straight print button that avoids a PDF file or Adobe Acrobat is one of the worst design issues I have seen on any widely used software in a long time. What if Microsoft decided on the latest Windows that you had to go to a PDF to get Word to print. TurboTax has little in the way of competition and its a good thing or I would be gone for good.
What's great about it: Reasonable accurate
What's not so great: Printing was a nightmare

filed late after many lost hours trying Turbotax
on April 20, 2014

I really struggled with Turbo tax for two years in a row. I had problems removing a state input, when I accidentally loaded a state that was needed for my daughter's return, but wasn't needed for my return. I also struggled to download a state. There may be something that is incompatible between Turbo tax and my computer because I don't have problems downloading data for other programs. I couldn't efile on time because TurboTax detected an update was needed. Then TurboTax went into an infinite loop trying to do what was supposed to be a 1 minute update. I tried several times, then had to file for an extension manually. Unfortunately, the post offices in Mississippi were all closed by 11 p.m. on the 15th, so I ended filing my requests for extension late. I am very disappointed with TurboTax and will be comparing other tax programs to see which one I will be using next year.
What's great about it: All forms avail, good walk through to fill in data
What's not so great: state download wouldn't work, updates wouldn't work, filed late because updates wouldn't load

Rejected with no good explanation

Got a rejected return and the explanation of the error doesn't fit. Went back to return and analysis says all is good. Now my return is late. What is going on?

Questions are asked in general terms, and if more details are needed, on-screen or on-line help is available.
Auto-import from prior year's taxes makes for a quick start!
What's great about it: Takes the fear out of filing. Auto-download of forms from employers and various financial institutions is great!
What's not so great: A "Save" prompt after each section would be a beneficial safety net.
