Business as usual
on April 20, 2014

I've been using TurboTax year after year after year, and will continue to do so. I import last year's info, go through the entire process, and am e-filing within 2 hours.
I can't see why I'd change that. Thanks, Turbo Tax
What's great about it: Familiar, Easy, Thorough, Secure
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Problems for the first time
on April 20, 2014
Posted by: kaysefile
good if you don't have issues and you won't know you have issues til you use it, then there are no humans and the tax office down the street begins to look a lot better
What's great about it: Still easy to use
What's not so great: This year I filed the same as always, but taxes would not e-file, no human for assistance, no guidance with the IRS, not

Turbo Tax Deluxe
on April 20, 2014
Posted by: cmcg123
I found Turbo Tax Deluxe to be a great product. It was easy to file my returns and cut my time in filling out papers to a fraction of what it used to be in prior years. The staff at Turbo Tax (I called for help in choosing a product) was courteous and extremely helpful. I would definitely recommend Turbo Tax.
What's great about it: Ease of navigating through return.
What's not so great: That I could not see all of he data as I entered it ( I am used to the paper form and seeing the progression)

Self Employment tax computation
on April 20, 2014
Posted by: xJJx
In most previous years I had to create a ficticious 1099 to account for income #on the employer's W-2# that did not directly pay employer contributions to SSA and medicade #self-employment tax#. In the past I have had challenges from the IRS because their techician did not understand why I was forced to create a fictious self-employment "business."
What's great about it: now automatic computation for employee of foreign NGOs
What's not so great: Does not go automatically from e-file fed to mail state; this program does not recognize my nickname "JJ"
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Using 2013 TurboTax
on April 20, 2014
Posted by: LarryHSr
I tried to enter my IP PIN and it only accepted 5 digits. Therefore I enter my assigned PIN. The next day I got a reject notice. Today I tried again and since I could not enter my IP PIN I choose Option 2, AGI.
What's great about it: I've been using TurboTax for over a decade and I like the ease of enterig my info.
What's not so great: This is the first year that I choose e-file. It go rejected because I did not enter my IP PIN (6 digits). Accepted 5
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

The Joy Continues
on April 20, 2014

About 20+ years ago, I worked for H&R Block one year- the software they were using was terrible and completely put me off any tax software. Ten years ago I had a complex return because I was laid off and had to exercise some stock options and had a couple of capital gains. I was going crazy trying to understand all the instructions and finally decided to try TurboTax. I was impressed as it quickly cleared up my problems and made a very difficult return a piece of cake. I have been back every year since and now have the automatic purchase feature set up. It is not perfect, but it is way better than doing it by hand.
What's great about it: Works better every year in all respects. The best part is the carryover of data from prior year - saves a lot of work.
What's not so great: Sometimes it is hard to get around a form you don't need, but Turbo Tax thinks you do.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Watch out for State Fees to file
on April 20, 2014
Posted by: Marcus1974
The only real annoyance is the filing fees for a state return, and having to go to "another" site to complete the transaction. Quite a premium, all things considered.
I mostly like Turbo Tax as it allows importation of previous years, and does keep track of taxable transactions that might slip through my memory.
Frankly, I wonder about these tax programs and how they work with regards to the Q&A format. I used to get the IRS forms and instructions, just to keep track of what Turbo Tax is doing. I gave up on this when it was hard to locate the forms and instructions locally.
Overall, I will continue to use Turbo Tax, and accept the annoyances.
What's great about it: Consistency, import revious years
What's not so great: Hard to find the actual IRS forms being filled in and printing
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

Don't know why I used TurboTax since 1993
on April 20, 2014
Posted by: GRANDN
Having lived in a foreign country, TurboTax always gave me headaches on the handling of foreign tax credits. I used to prorate my entries because of foreign income exclusions, but somewhere along the way TT started to prorate as if I had not prorated and thus causing double proration and thus inaccurate foreign tax credit in favor of the IRS. More recently TT has failed to keep track of multiple e-filings because of IRS rejections, thus the electronic post mark associated with the last rejection, made it look like the return was not filed by its deadline
What's great about it: Consistently lacking good features
What's not so great: Designed for the masses and not for demanding situations
