I transmitted my return four times and it has been rejected each time.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: Have not successfully filed my forms so now my return is late.

I could have a real tax person do everything (and me do almost nothing) for only about $20 more than what TurboTax cost. This software is way too expensive. You guys are making a killing!
Good software, but I'll probably go with a real person next time.
What's great about it: thorough, reliable, easy to use
What's not so great: too expensive

Excellent...except.....

First thing: I've used TurboTax for decades after using other products to compare them. The market has clearly voted: TurboTax is the best.
Having said that...I had an irritating problem with my "first time" state tax forms. We moved from a non-state-tax home to a state with taxes (Arizona).
TurboTax was "confused" when I used my new address for filing: it reported that I did not need to file a state income tax even though my new address was clearly not the same as last year's and in a state that does charge income taxes.
I manually downloaded the state tax forms and TurboTax proceeded to pick the wrong form for a full year by default instead of asking me if I had been at my new address for a partial year.
It took me 20 minutes or so to figure out which form I really needed, then I manually chose that form after doing some research on the state web site.
I filled in the appropriate information and TurboTax did its review. It reported everything was OK. I e-Filed and the state form was rejected with a vague error about a template problem. I followed the instructions in the email TurboTax sent to me to reopen TurboTax and do a review.
I did a second review and TurboTax said all was OK. I resubmitted my tax form and it was rejected again, this time with a message about missing information on former address.
Searching the state forms manually, I did not see anything on the forms that let me put in my former address....
So, I let TurboTax do another review, got a clean result and resubmitted my tax form which was rejected again.
I manually searched the forms and noticed that there was an Information Worksheet that TurboTax reported in the forms menu as being incomplete. I looked at the form carefully and did not see anything missing.....until...the third or fourth look, I noticed a small, one character field, in line with 4 other one character fields. The first one was pink the others blue.
This was the missing byte. The information on the worksheet....not the tax form itself....asked for the state (not the address) I had lived in previously.
TurboTax missed the error completely in its review and did not report a problem with the worksheet.
I resubmitted the review one more time and 24 hours later it was accepted.
So, to summarize: TurboTax did not correctly recognize that I had changed states and missed an important item on the Information Worksheet which resulted in significant additional time and labor on my part.
What's great about it: Great step-by-step with detailed questions
What's not so great: State form had errors: did not integrate smoothly with Federal
Pros: I moved

I had a good experience entering the darta and information on the returns as prompted. I had never used the electronic submission before and did not know to look for a return message of approval.
What's great about it: Ease of use
What's not so great: no warning that I had to wait for approval of the electronic submission.

Taxcaster is a waste!
on April 18, 2014

We've used TurboTax for many years and are happy with it. This was the first time we used Taxcaster, due to having to file an extension. It said we still owed almost $4K, which we sent in. We finished our return today and sent it in. We are owed $2K, a $6K difference! Now we've got to try to get it all back from the government, a potential headache in and of itself. We won't be using Taxcaster again, nor will be recommending it to others. If you're not familiar with Taxcaster, it's TurboTax's tax estimator program, something you'd seldom use, and I hope you don't have to.
What's great about it: TurboTax is great
What's not so great: Taxcaster was not close to being accurate

TurboTax walked me carefully through everything -- and provided easy-to-understand explanations where I needed them. I've used this 3 years in a row and it gets better every year. And it was great from the very beginning.
What's great about it: Easy, complete, trustworthy -- helpful all the way through
